FLASHBACK - first impressions

I just got my FLASHBACK kit this afternoon and I'm already half finished. Once again Mountain Models has produced an outstanding kit. The laser cut parts fall right out of the balsa sheets, and the parts fit together exceptionally well. I'll probably finish it tomorrow. I can't wait to fly it. I'll keep you posted.

Cool!!!

I think that is my next plane. What are you going to power it with?

Let me know how it is going.....

I will meet Doug next Saturday at the DEAF fly in - I want to see this plane fly!

I will eventually be putting a geared Mega brushless in it. I think I'll wait to see what other people decide to use before I actually buy the Mega. I'm not very good at experimenting with motor and gear ratios. I'll wait until the experts figure out the best combination for the plane.

It's building up very fast. If I get some time this evening to work on it, I should be able to finish. It's only a 2 or 3 evening project for any average model builder. You could probably build it in one day if you had the time.

Well, I just ordered a Flashback as a backup to my SB 3D. Plan on putting a mega 1615/xx in it as well. I'll also wait until the 'experts' figure out a good combo for the plane . Want to use my 600s and 1100s batteries in the plane as well.

Keep the Flashback 'impressions' coming .

I just got some of those purple 1100's. I'm thinking about making some 8 cell and 10 cell packs.

This is what I was thinking about for the flashback:

Mega 16/15/4
3:1 Gearbox
10cell 1100 pack

where did you guys order them from? I checked www.mountainmodels.com and I didn't see them. Would one of those cobalt 400 motors from wattage work well in one?

Ooh boy me too

I just got my Flashback in the mail today too, ooooh boy.

I haven't started working on it, need to get one other thing off the bench which should be done tonight.

I'm waiting on other brushless reports as well, so I am going with the recommended setup for now. I've got 8 of the HECells I will making into a pack, hope they work out.

This will be my first balsa kit to build, and from all looks and reports, it sounds like it is going to go together pretty smoothly. The instructions are very clear. This will also be my first covering job, which could be a challange. I'm thinking that maybe I should get SoLite instead of the Doculam. I think I would rather have solid colors to get a better top/bottom contrast scheme.

I've got an airbrush and could paint the Doculam, I'm not too awful concerned about how long that would take, just that it would come nice.

Any experiences on how nice this stuff paints?
How would the weight compare: Doculam+paint vs SoLite?

The Doculam is heavier than the Solite so adding paint will just make things worse. Still, Doculam is stronger than Solite. For maximum performance, Solite would be the way to go.

coclimber,
Will you be at DEAF with some flashbacks by any chance? If so how much will you be selling them for?

What do you 'prop' for?

Okay, the question is : What do you prop for in a 'pattern' type plane like the Flashback... Speed? Thrust? 3D type maneuvers are not important (it's not a 3D plane like the E3D) -- right? Just trying to get a feel for where to start when looking at Motor/gear/prop combinations with a Mega or a Hacker ..... Any ideas? How would an 'expert' approach the problem without a bunch of 'trial and error' . I want to stay with 8 cells (because thats what I have of 600AE and 1100 Nimh)....

Prop for some speed. The stock power system is giving me about 1:1 thrust to weight on 10 cells which should be easy to get with the Mega while still having plenty of speed.
