Magnum XL .52 FS on a 96oz warbird?

I am just finishing up a Model Tech P-51 and am putting a Magnum XL .52 FS on it.

Will this .52 motor power this plane. Weighs about 96oz.

Thanks,

Yes it will, but don't expect vertical performance at 96oz all up weight. It will probably fly pretty much scale. Real Mustangs couldn't fly straight up either.

If you are on a grass field I doubt if you will get it off the runway. I had mine on a 17% Giles that was much lighter and the performance was poor. I would go with a 70.

I've been flying a World/Airborne Mustang for several years and I believe it is about the same size as your modeltech. I first flew it with a Saito 72 and it flew just fine- like a sport plane. I now fly it with a 91 Saito and it is really a blast. No lead needed to balance, just moved the battery back a little. I don't believe you would be satisified with a 52 four stroke.

Thanks Fred,

Problem I have is there is only 3 1/8" from the firewall to the spinner face??

The bigger motors seem to be longer than 3 1/8"

Thanks,

I have usually found that there is more than one way to skin a cat, and more than one way to mount an engine. Seek and ye shall find.

I posted this in another thread but it applies equally here.
On my Magnum 61 four stroke using 15% fuel and a MA 12x6 Smicitar I get 10000 sustained RPM and using a fish scale measure 5lb 5oz (85oz) static thrust.
The 61 is about 18% bigger than a 52, not sure that everything scales 1:1 but assume that it does and you are looking at 4lb 8oz (72oz) static thrust.
I would not be happy with the 61 four stroke on this plane.
