Which portable video recording device?

Seeing as we've had topics such as "which receiver" and "which goggles", what about which video recording device?

I currently have a Mustek PVR-H140.

Seems to record alright, but records in MPEG-4 ASF format, which is a bit of a pain to convert (any suggestions welcome).

Battery life is a lot to be desired, but that may be because it's a couple of years old.

Support from Mustek is excellent. I needed the software installation disk, which they were happy to send out free of charge.

I've been using the Aiptek PVR. It's an incremental upgrade from the MPVR.

It can be found on sale for $99, but does require a SD memory card.
It records at 640x480@30FPS, and as an added bonus, you can fly the camera in the plane and let it record what it sees. While not FPV flying, this can be alot of fun, too.

I'm happy with my Archos 604 WiFi w/ travel adapter (for PVR). It's a little expensive (roughly the same price, all together, as an AV500, though, and the performance is the same), but it's a well rounded unit (and is also great for travel!).

For ultimate video sharpness, use a miniDV camcorder that has AV In. The small memory card recorders (Aiptek, etc.) are very handy, and usually require one less step in getting the video on to the computer (capturing process is required for miniDV). But the cost is they use compression to store the video. So you never get a sense of what the true resolution of the system is capable of. I have thought several times of getting one of these just for simplicity. But I like to watch my video in their native state. And for me, nothing beats a miniDV format. I currently use a Canon Elura 2MC to record to miniDV tapes.

Indeed, the DV camcorder is the best choice. ASF is a pain, and unfortunately all the PVR's I've heard of but the Archos ones use it. That freeware can be of some help with format conversions:

Pretty crappy interface, but the converter I know of with the most supported formats.

Anyone tried a computer

How about useing a laptop computer ? .... lots of flexability.
I experimented with video capture with good results...
Got a USB video capture box for $45.00 from NewEgg.com and captured PAL 720x576 to AVI files. Worked well. NTSC signals work just as well.

Yes, that's possible. And some people do that. But I find it just means more and more "stuff" to take to the field. It's bad enough with all of the additional equipment needed for FPV flight. So I prefer a compact solution (miniDV camcorder).
