Rich is right, my PT-188 is scratch built. BUT - the models built to scale should all weigh about the same; whether it's my scratch built one or the Lindberg plastic kit. The 1943 series 80' Elco PT displaced 51 tons, which converts to 3.5 pounds for a 1:32 scale model. The 1945 series 80' Elco's displaced 61 tons, which converts to a scale weight of 4.2 lbs. We can scale down the size and mass of our models, we can't scale down the water.

For anyone who slept during math class, here's the scale weight formula:

Full size ship displacement in tons X 2240 lbs in a long ton divided by the cube of the scale.

For the 1:32 scale Elco 80' PT's it works out like this:
51x2240/32768 = 3.5 lbs (1.58 kg)
61x2240/32768 = 4.2 lbs (1.9 kg)

The 1943 series had a top speed of 43 knots, converted for scale wake makes the speed 7.6 mph (12.23 kmh). The 1945 series top speed of 41 knots converts to 7.2 mph (11.58 kmh) for scale wake. The model's speed over ground will be faster than scale speed, but the wake will be scale in appearance because we can't scale down water.

Stephen, I've tried using AA's on my PT but it doesn't work. I believe this is because the continuous supplied current is too low on AA's compared to sub C's. I've just ordered some NiMh's 4200mAh's at 70A continuous. How's the built going?

Hi pKboo

It’s been a while since I last laid my hands back on this project. I've been waiting for some parts and they arrived today. Bad new about the AA's not giving you a good result. What motors are you using? I'd love to know

Hi Stephen,

I have a multiplex600 in my PT which should get between 15.000 to 19.000 rpm's at 9,6V. The props (3x32mm/35mm/37mm) are driven thru a 1:2.5 gearbox. It don't mather which size prop I use, the motor does not get the juice and even shuts down (like the battery is low on current). I don't have this problem with the Sub C's. I got GP's 2700NiMh's which I'm now putting in the Tx of one of my Fletcher DD's (next project). Which parts were you waiting for? Already started on the paint job? Be good Eugène

Hi Eugène

Your motors are juicy motors, only sud C cells will deliver that kind of juice.
According to the chap from whom I purchase my 385 motors they only consume 1A at 12v with a 30mm prop. Therefore I now hope hat my AA batt's will work well.

I was waiting for my speed controller, brass motor inserts, servo box (because I sold the one I had to a friend). I am hoping to start again so as to finish my project shortly.

Anyway I will always keep you updated with wants new.

Thanks

Stephen

Hello

Just added a few more pic showing final stages of my build. I've done a test drive and the boat really cruises well. Soon I will start painting! that will be an interesting part of this project ZEBRA CAMO

kmot and pKboo , I am using RAL colours and I hope I am getting them right, remember I am going to apply the ZEBRA camo soon, my reference pictures are black and white. Not much help I’m afraid.
