Plans For A *FAST* Plane Made Of EPS AND/OR Flat Foam?
I've got a 3200 k/v 300watt 30 amp outrunner that I'm looking to throw on a homemade foamie build. Was going to throw it on the Stryker but would rather build something that is made just for speed.
I like working with EPS white foam and have homemade hot wire tools to build planes with it. However, I'll consider making something out of Cell Foam 88 (Like Depron) or perhaps a hybrid using EPS for the fuse and Cell foam 88 for the wing/etc. What I'm looking for is a design that is simple to build and is streamlined for maximum speed, probably in the 15 to 20 ounce weight range. I have no preference for what type of plane it is but I don't want to build another delta wing. I've been searching the net for some free plans but there is so much clutter it's hard to dig up a design with the above criteria. Any links would be of great help. |

Here is a thread for a sweat plane. Fast, light, durable, not a delta- it has a tail w/elevator and a rudder could be optional. Plans are a pdf in post #23
https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...=297635&page=2 some of the guys may have plans for different versions or scales all throughout the thread. Also hobby lobby has an almost identical plane called the "firebird" faux jet. They have video of this fast thing. Here's the link http://www.hobby-lobby.com/firebird-jet.htm hope this helps -DB |

Wow, great response. Thanks for the links! I'll check them out tomorrow as I'm too worn out at the moment. Just one comment...Once you use white EPS "box" foam you'll never go back to pink or blue, baby. Stuff is lighter and way less brittle in it's own way. You'd be surprised at just how strong a 2" thick piece of it is. A little Extreme strapping tape makes the stuff even better if needed, but if I'm real worried about a stress point I'll use normaly use flat carbon or carbon tubes to stiffen things up. Have to check into the bambo skewers as I hear good things about using that. Thanks again and I'll read things over more closely tomorrow.
By the way, any links to a design with two triangle-like wings...a small one in front and a larger one in back? I remember long ago hearing about a Russian high speed plane that used a similar design. That would be different. |

Welp, settled on a build for the 3200 k/v 30 amp 300 watt motor. Friend heard what I was looking for in a design and drew me up an outline to surprise me with. Pretty much hit it dead on in what I was wanting to build. Here's a few photos and stats. I'll post the print if anybody wants to build this thing. I might do a build thread as well.
Well, after a re-work of the fuse design (Not really a re-work, I just used the top of the print to cut it rather than the side view this time.) I'm a little more happy about this speed platform for the 3200 k/v outrunner. Here's some specs thus far and pictures. The foam was just thrown together with toothpicks for the picture so I could soak it all in and see if I wanted to stick with this design. I think I like it... Purpose: Wanted something designed for all out speed, squeezing every last bit out of this motor. Design: Custom job a friend drew up for me after I outlined what I was thinking to build. Modified it here and there to my liking. Wingspan: 28 inches Fuse: EPS foam Wings/Verticle stabs: Cell Foam 88 5MM Intended Controls: Elevons (Probably balsa) Canopy: Parkzone P51 Motor: Don's 3200 k/v 30 amp 300 watt outrunner Servos: 2 HS81s RX: Some crap Feather Hitec Job, but plane is small so I'll keep it close. ESC: One of Don's Pentium 30 ampers with 40 burst. Might need to upgrade to a 40 amp ESC to take full potential of this motor on various props? Lipo: 3 cell 20C 2200ma Hi-Model (with like 28C burst) Strength Mods: I'm going to carbon this baby up and add Extreme strapping tape. Doubts: Many, not sure if the 28" wingspan is large enough for this size motor and lipo? At the very least it should fly if I throw it like a fast ball. Also concerned it's going to land so fast the nose will get roached. Might add a custom 3 wheel retract using piano wire and one servo. Will at least need to consider a landing skid to protect nose. Might also make the nose detachable with magnets to absorb landing momentum. |
