B-29 Plans

Inspired by some E-Zone posts and with the help of some E-Zone members, I have drawn up a set of plans for a sport scale B-29. Construction is foam and balsa and power is 4 x 6v Speed 400 motors. Wing span is 80.5 inches it is 55 inches long.

I have started cutting the foam templates and I will post my progress on this thread.

Looks good to me , Jim.
Are you going with foam covered in glass overall or sheeting with wood?

looks a lot like the Titantic bird. I have one and it flies great. Same size and motors. Build it, you won't regret it. Plans look real good.

The construction is 1/16" balsa over white foam for the wings and fuse. I'm sure they could be glassed, but I'm better with monocote than paint. Besides, this bird is crying for a good chrome finish. The tail feathers are sheet balsa.

I guess it does look like the Titanic model. I've seen George fly his Tu-4, but it's too big and heavy to be an everyday flyer, so I made a smaller version.

I have all of the templates cut, but I was wondering if anyone had a source for foam that is 3" thick? I've checked the E-zone archives (do you know how many posts there are with the word foam in them?), but haven't found anything. The fuse is 5" in diameter and I would like to cut the fuse in two pieces. I have some 2" stock from Home Depot, but trying to keep three pieces of foam lined up could be a problem while trying to hollow out the inside. My current plan is to cut the outside of the fuse and sheet it, and then cut the inside.

a thin misting of 3M-77 will hold the thinner foam together and not impede a hot wire. Back in my beer cooler airplane days,..er,.. I mean foamie days ,.. I did this on some rather large glow stuff. Cheap and simple way to get thicker foam.

looks like a great project. I am new to this foam-cutting art, so let me ask a stupid question ---I see the templates for the wings, but how do you cut the bottoms?

That's a good idea on using the 3M-77. Maybe I'll get a chance to try it this weekend.

To cut a set of foam cores for wings, you make two passes, one for the bottom (first) and one for the top. If you look at the templates, there is a line for the top and bottom contour. You just have to make a total of four templates. They are just drawn together to save space on the plans.

You always cut the bottom of the wing first, since the wire will evaporate some of the material and the core will settle down into the bed. If you cut the top first, you'll end up with a thinner wing than planned.

If you want to see one fly, go to this link. Sorry about the landing, it was very windy and a transmitter near by gave me a little glitch. She's a tuff bird, there wasn't a scratch on her or a broken prop.

www.aircraftspruce.com carries 4" thick blue foam. I'm not sure about white EPS.
