M-3 is Retired.

Had some good tests today and finally filmed M-3 for the development documentary.

I am now running it with spoilerons for my high alpha maneuvers. When it is doing its thing where the nose is way up and its going slow, the wings and ailerons stall out cause they are going too slow and their angle of attack is to great. The spoilerons give me back control. They also help with the flips.

Also put 2 smoke bombs on the wings weighing a total of 1.6oz extra. Besides catching a wing tip on fire, the test was a success. I am going to have few scenes in the final video with smoke so you can see a perspective of how slow it falls and flips.

When I flew it with the extra weight/bombs, everyone of us (5 of us) immediately saw that it flew way better with the extra weight! The plane flew so nice and smooth and the flips and stunts where much more solid and less light and flippy. I knew a heavier wing loading would give it more scale like jet performance.

You'll see what I mean when the video comes out...

Thanks Don. I'm using this thread to document the progress so I have some good notes to go off when I wright the Development Page.

Got to tell ya, I am absolutely convinced, after 6 months of studying and many flight experiments, that... well, how do I put this... I will never fly my jets "light" anymore. No way, I am totally convinced.

I will fly all my 3D foamies as light as possible, but not my jets. The flight performance is so much more jet like with a little meat on the foam.

I am looking very much to running a few more tests with a slightly bigger battery and that KH2413-SP of yours. I think that's even more what I am looking for in performance.

The only other thing I am curious about is having weight on the wing tips (like the smoke bombs did) VS all the weight running forward/aft. Got some inertia issues to look at beyond just weight and CG...

I worked early on on the real f-22 and interesting enough the thrust vectoring system was highly secret-it was dejavu to see your thrust vectoring blacked out-halbw4

Just Like The Real Thing


LOW POWER GLIDER OR HI POWER BRICK. Most aircraft work better if they are not too heavy. It would be nice to windtunnel test the mods to see how or if they help dymanic flight control. This is harder yet when looking at recovery from a spin or flippover. The real planes do not recover from these well !!!!! A bit of lead or a gyro can do wonders in the right place. Keep trying to push the envelope........
