Nick, I appreciate your turning me onto this thread a few weeks ago. I've been looking at the "plane" you have in post 6449. Does it really fly -- or only in ground effect?

I appologize for having not read all 400+ pages of the thread yet, but was wondering if you have more info on this one?

Also planning on a build of your short EZ. This looks like fun!

PS: How do you get more than 1 prop onto a spinner? Do they make ones with "extra long" shafts so that 2 hubs can fit on?

Hello Steve

It's a great thread isn't it? Is this the plane you mean? not a canard, it was made by taking a mini Polaris and building it with 2 hulls and a space in between.. I was going to try and add a canard to try and manage it in GE, but I have given up on that idea.

That is one WOW (Weird, Oddball, Wondrous) flying device.

Is it a tri-surface layout, a canard with a T tail (of some mind-boggling sort) or a T Tail'er with almost a canard surface at the front?

Whatever, the take off was neat and it sure flies good. Thank you for the video

They're ordinary spinners, I can't remember where I got them from. The props are APC, with a little of the thickness shaved off the hub.

Short EZ


It's a Long EZ wing plan, with a bit removed from the tips. My first attempt had the fins too small and too much side area of the fuze at the front. Amendments were then suggested by Don Stackhouse.

A very successful KFm2 experiment. Still a favorite for slow flying in rough fields with the dog.

Shinden as sloper


I'm considering scratch building a Shinden for PSS. I'm wondering if the large side area will foul-up its' performance on the slope. I flew an Astro blaster on the slope and it was ok but it was about a third as tall in the fuse.

Will enlarging the Vert stabs and increasing the sweep help?

Is there a post about a Shinden sloping?

Will the Shinden handle the cross winds? I bet it blows back at the top of a half-pipe.
I'll inquire in the slope forum, too.

Maybe you canardist's have some experience?

An airplane does not feel cross winds in flight as long as they are steady (gusts or strong wind shears are another matter) The only way a plane "knows" about steady winds at all is if it's connected to the ground (which can unfortunately include being connected through a ground-based pilot, who does not understand the difference between groundspeed and airspeed). Same reason why downwind turns are not the problem, it's the pilots who don't understand the optical illusions behind the myth.

Regarding the Shinden, our experience with it (we had a Roadkill Series kit of it under development) indicated that even with an enlarged canard and hugely enlarged fins, it had problems with both pitch and yaw stability. In particular, we found that the chord of even an enlarged canard had Reynolds numbers so much less than the wing that even tiny differences in construction resulted in large differences in stability and handling from one prototype to the next. Some of them flew great, others were nearly unflyable. If you can't get consistent results, the kit cannot go into production!

With the higher Reynolds numbers of a larger model, this might be less of a problem. Also, a round fuselage will do better in yaw than a profile one on a plane like this. Lots of profile fuselage side area in front of the C/G can be very destabilizing in yaw.

Am I a big dummy. For some strange reason I didn't check on this thread for a while. I now have 100 + pages to read. This won't happen again, that is for sure.

Not sure I can wrap my head around all that Don Stackhouse posts, I sort of understand some of what he says, other parts are way over my head and math is not my strong suit. Never understood it, sometimes I still don't.

Oh well, back to reading and I hope be caught up by the end of the month.
