Rudder hinge time...

This can be a bit intimidating for a first-timer... I first determine where the hinges should go. I am using 1/8 Robart hinge points. They will be recessed all the way back to the center if the leading-edge radius. That means the bottom one will actually be deeper than the top, because the radius is larger. These have to be square and true so I use my tube-taped-to-the-triangle method for keeping it all square. Once the rudder's drilled and relieved, I make a couple of centering punches out of 1/8 dowell, and put them in the rudder. I place the rudder exactly where it has to go, and push them in to mark the fin post. Like this...

Work with it until...

... you have 30 degrees of movement without binding or pushing the rudder out... It is doable.... ... Here's the proof...

Good looking ship, Jack! I was wondering if you ever heard anything more from Mark Miller on the Hawk kits?

That's the nicest wooden fuse I've seen in a long while, maybe ever! Really cool. :^)

Almost ready...

I added the trim and cut in the spoilers and they're hinged. I need to get the radio installed and balance her and she's ready. I was going to do a lot more trim but decided against it. I need some 1/8 chrome striping tape. Maybe in my travels next week I can pick some up. Hoping to maiden tomorrow... if the wind'll die down, I will! I may yet change the canopy color. I tried twice to make it chrome but the Monokote wouldn't shrink that much. I found the Monokote to be fine for the wings and stabs, but the fuselage and rudder are Ultracoat. It was not any easier than Monokote, but did handle the curve of the canopy easier due mostly to the color...

Tail view

I wanted to add this view of the tail because it shows how nicely you can make a wood rudder/fin combination fit, with a little work. It's very thick, being the NACA010. The stabs start with that airfoil and taper to NACA008. In spite of it's size, it's all pretty light. When balanced and ready I'll publish her weight... even though it's not really nice to talk about a girl in that way...

By the way... thanks for the kind words, guys...

V-Tails???

AJ,

Are we going to have to have another flyoff... like we did with Hawks #1 and #2? Needs a V-tail... what a comment... ...

Allen, the Hawk kits are coming, but Mark's about to move to St. Louis. The release will probably follow his move.

Another kit note, Brian at Mountain Models / Laser Arts says he wants to do a full kit of the Yardbird. I'll be busy redrawing and detailing it for the next month or so.

One quick word about this airfoil... The S3014 shows a slight reflex close to the trailing edge. Try to stay true to that. I put on a sock and ironed the Monokote down to the ribs beginning at the aft edge of the sheeting. It should fly quite nicely, and with a bit of ballast, penetrate nicely too.

Good news on both fronts! Even though I've been wanting a HH for awhile now, and will most likely get one when Mark gets the kit together (with FG fuse hopefully), the Yardbird really appeals to me as a builder. I LOVE the look of the YB fuselage and since it's a woody kit, should be relatively easy to produce in kit form, compared to a FG fuse. Thanks for the awesome build thread Jack!
