F-35 CTOL First Flight at noon EST TODAY!


In case any of you aviation buffs are interested...

The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter CTOL(Conventional Take-Off and Landing) variant will have it's first flight at noon today.

I do not know where you can get a video feed of it but I'm sure copies will show up by tonight.

In case you are wondering how I know this. I work on the engine for the plane.

Not knocking it, but this is by far the most expensive military program--by any country--ever.

Wait'll you see the price tag on the CVX.....but that ship is long overdue!

The best program I have ever seen that did not get past the planning stage was the Arsenal Ship......but then we would not need Carrier pilots, except for precision strike and CAS...

They're doing pretty cool things with legacy systems. The old battleship 16 inch guns had a terrible CEP on level land--like a half mile . The new 5" guns (that practically everything can carry) can fire 5" GPS-guided rounds 60 nautical miles and hit within a few meters of the target.

60 miles is nice, unless your target is 300nm inland...the arsenals were designed to carry thousands of cruise missiles, and be able to ripple fire at multiple targets. An entire bombing campaign, all in one shot!

All this helps when the enemy army surrenders, you occupy the country and then the real fighters come in and fight a guerrilla war of hit and run and use no electronics?

No, the Army needs to stand the Civil Affairs units back up; we went from 12+ during the Cold War to only two, both of them Reserve units. And you wonder why (other than posting Bremer there) the situation is screwed up? The CA units job was to handle the post conflict occupation/rebuilding process, providing police services, infrastructure rebuilding, civil government services, etc...

Depends on how you are definging "unit". We have a good bit more than 2 CA units in the Army right now - 4 CA commands, each with a Brigade plus two battalions. These 4 are all reservists, and there are too few of them for the type of conflicts we are most likely to face and the current rate of deployments. Unless overall force ceilings are raised (they will be very soon), assesing CA units back onto the active rolls would be counter-productive.

Update on CTOL first flight:

The flight was a complete success as you may already know with a 35 minute flight. What you may not know is the engine performed beyond expectations to such a degree that during initial climb out both the PW-220E and GE-132 powered F-16 chase planes went to afterburner to maintain pace with the F-35.

Maybe a new ground to 10K record is in this planes future

I am so glad they picked the F-35 over the Boing model...what a turd that thing would have been....it was overweight in the prototype....and didn't have any internal room left for expansion.
