Too old to rock-n-roll...

It's hard to see in the photo but the ailerons look like they're 1/3 the chord. How do you stiffen the ailerons so they don't twist flex when they're so thin? Are the servos wing mounted?

The ailerons are very weak and do flex but since the plane is so light it flies fine. Servos are mounted in the wing.

Maiden flight with spare wing. AUW is now only 191g.

Live to fly... Fly to live

Gone but not forgotten...

I built this one out of Dollar Tree Foam Board awhile back.It did Ok but had a nasty tendency to stall out in a turn and spiral down a bit. I finally figured that out and it ended it's life in the top of a tree. It was modeled after a Gentle Lady but with a bigger wing.

If you're gonna put her in a tree, right at the top is best!!

It looks very majestic when flying. Seems like it can almost turn on a wingtip.

Mudman, great to see it flying. What was the cause of the stalling behavior that you worked out, and did you find a solution for that plane?

Kaze 1.5m

Nice one, Boa. this thing floats! I wonder how you fix the wings to hold the dihedral.

Here is my foam glider Kaze:

(clickable image leads to the flight video)

Build from 3mm XPS foam, covered with 80 micron document laminating film. The wings are airfoiled, with foam ribs between the covering layers. Airfoils at the tip are AG38, at the center AG36, full flying H-stab with +- 90 degrees deflection, full-flying top part of the V-stab (about 45 degrees of deflection], 500g AUW, 9x6 folding prop, RaceStar 2208 KV1100 motor, 20A ESC, 3S 1300 mAh battery. The wing has 1.5 m span reinforced with a straight spar from 6mm x 1m carbon tube near the top surface, giving it a very small dihedral, plus the carbon tube flex. The fuselage is from 8mm carbon tube. Both tail surfaces are driven by pull-pull systems using kevlar fishing thread.

It has decent aerobatics capabilities, just the wing spar is too weak and bends in high-g manoeuvers. It also glides well, I measured it to be under 1 m/s Z-axis speed (how is it called in English? I mean it losses under 1 m of height per second). This can be acchieved only in light wind conditions, the small dihedral means that it has to be piloted all the time. But on the other hand, it also flies inverted decently, and the loop with 90 elevator deflection can be done literally around its CG.

My 96" span scratchbuilt foam glider is a wonderful flyer and the wing loading is about as light as glider builds get.

AUW: 1460 grams = 51.5 oz.
Wing Loading: 9.4 oz./sq. ft. or 28.5 grams/dm2

I posted the details on my 96" span Big Blu 96" span glider in this post:

https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...&postcount=236

I used the sailplane calc software to get an idea as to things like the wing and fuslage layout and size (this was my first ever serious glider build).

Sailplane Calc can be downloaded here:

This issue of the RC Soaring Digest magazine has a great article on using the Sailplane Calc software:

Based on a plan called the Condor, 80" span, Speed 600 motor, Nimh pack, (it's a bit ancient but still flown).

(Not exactly foam though)

My new foam board motor glider is going to look like an extended wing DLG. Very light with a 20g motor, folding prop, UMX brushless receiver, and a 2s300mA battery.

My "scratch built" motor glider

Here's mine. Built from a set of wings from an old bungee launch glider that one of my RC flying club members gave me.

It's got an arrow shaft boom, and a pod build from foam board and based off of the OSG. The vertical and horizontal stab are tape covered foam.

well, not truly scratch-built, but it was repaired so many times, so many ways,...
DLG converted to EP, much in the style seen here.
Motor came from a donor quad , given to me to use the surviving parts .
