OK, wizards, need ideas for prop/batt with GWS 100 in Pitts

Hi, guys,
I got the GWS 100 with the 3.22 gear in the Pitts and am trolling for suggestions for prop/batt combo. I am using QC830's and have tried:
Hand launching--
8x6 slow descent to the ground

9x7 flys ok, slow, not much climb. Forget aerobatics'

10x4.7 about the same as 9x7, slower though.

The thing weighs 9.5 oz. and has 210 sq in wing area. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Well, the gws 100 is pretty much the same weight as the gws 300 powerplant but is about half as powerful. You are better off using an M100 or a gws dual IPS if you want to stay light. Otherwise you need the 300. Ground clearance might hinder your decision because the dual IPS needs a large prop. The 300c takes a 10x8, which might barely make it with the stock LG. Let us know what you decide.

To echo what Spaulding said, I've not had much luck with the EPS 100, nor have I seen any rave rewiews here... I have had very good luck with the MiniMax motor/gearbox, which is very similar in power and ratio / prop size to the M100.

You may want to try the EDF hybrid thing on the IPS box. It'd keep the weight down.

Personally, I like the TigerShark hybrid. I have not done it with stock gears, but the 180 Egull motor with 4.8:1 gearing turning an 8x6 on QC830's is pretty good. It's a good 50% more power and speed than the IPS. It is a kludge job, though, so the MiniMax motor or the M100 are cleaner choices.

Thanks, where can I find the Tigershark and Egull motors? I really need to stay with a 9" or smaller prop because of the LG height. What about a 9x7 3-blade? Anyone try one of those on this type motor?

Here's the motor: http://www.toytx.com/egullmotor.html

The problem with the stic DX-A gears is that this motor is a little larger in diameter. The shaft is also larger, so the pinion would need drilled.

You can shim the motor from the side with some balsa an a little strapping tape to fit, though.

Here's how I did it with some other gears that I got from Bleriot. He wouldn't say where he found them

He may still have some motors and gears, but haven't seen him around in a while,

Try an APC 8x6 SF prop. I recently changed the motor on my Mini Tornado wing to an EPS100 s1 #.22 like yours and a 8xs GWS prop, would hardly fly! Cut the shaft and mounted a 3mm collett adaptor an an APC 8x6 SF and it flys great, what a difference!! Using 8 cell 720 AAA NiMH don't bother with 7 cells.
