my me109 scratch build

hey all,
just though i would share some pics of my 109 scratch build.

i got started flying about a month and a half ago,
and jumped right into building my first model from scratch with
minimal plans... 30min of adobe illustrator tracing some 109 drawings i found online. cross sections came from measuring
topview and side view, then guessing at the curves.

I couldnt stop myself from cutting, CAing and building long enough to plan anything out, so it is definately a rough looking little airframe. i had the fuse done before i knew how to connect the wing, and had to cut away lots of the frame to make it join correctly. lol

the wingspan is 32"
total weight right now i would estimate at 2 or 3 oz heavier than my pico FD without any electronics in it. but thats a WILD guess.

anybody have any recommendations for a SUPER cheap power plant? i want it to fly more scale than electronuts.

all the gear from my PICO minus the ESC is going into it,

6cell,
2 servos, (aeliron and elevator)
10 amp ESC (but i am in a market for a new one)

i was thinking about a directdrive gws 400sp from balsapr.com. At 10 bucks i couldnt beat it! i would rather have the 370 but they are out of stock. anyone?

covering will be monocoat, but i want to paint it... anyone recommend some good spray paint or should i just use acrylics? i figure if acrylics scratch or flake it will look great because of the grey monocoat i bought. any problems with wieght and acrylics?

what have i learned from all this?
that know youve got a problem when you CA yourself to your model, and proceed to cut your finger rather than the model.

thanks in advance people.

Looks great for yor first scratch!
I wonder how it flies with that tail - seems a little small to me

Good luck with your flights!!

Heck, I'm still in kindergarden building class compared to you.

Direct drive sp400 or long can 480 but your going to need some different cells like 600AE's to get the power out of it.

yeah, i am also concerned about the tail a bit,
thought about making it larger,
but i didn't want to deviate from scale much.

using the aelirons will help a bit, just hope she isn't
too squirly in the air.

That looks great!--

you going to give me a chance to crash... I mean fly it?

It must be nice having enough free time to whittle that plane from scratch!

Rob's building skill Does not run throughout the family, unfortunately--!!

BTW--Rob, can you come help me get this delta wing going?

sure rob, i can help with the dwing...
of course that might be considered out of scope of the
existing proposal... but hourly rates do apply!

Nice looking 109! Will you be adding landing gear, or just hand launch?

thanks for the kind words guys...

dreamer:

hand launch for now...

i love trying for a really beautiful landing,
but rob's zero looked so cool in the air with no gear down,
that i have to do the same here. Retracts are not an option
as i am on a serious budget, and dont have any extra servos
laying around, much less a pair of those apparently fragile gws retracts.

by the way, i really dig all your planes dreamer...

Very nice! you've got some great scale lines in there.
I am also finishing up a scratch built 109 from my own plans. I am working on wingtips and sanding out the wing saddle to get a tight fit at the moment.
I fly all of mine without the wheels as I mostly land on grass and it saves on weight anyway. Warbirds just don't look right with the wheels hanging down. I did enlarge the tail on mine slightly as it made me a little nervous. Yours is more scale for sure though.
I use a 6v speed 400 in mine with a 7 cell 600AE pack.
Target weight is around 15.5 to 16 ounces on mine.
If you use this setup be ready. They go like hell!

Professional idiot
Lookin' good. I wish I could bash balsa that well.

RCM&E have just given away free plans for a spit and 109 this size. I did see that the prototype of the 109 had a scale size wing but wouldn't fly, area much to small resulted in a very high wing loading, theirs looks to be similar weight, speed 400 and 8 cells. The second prototype had the wing area increased and it went ok.

Looking forward to all the flight reports. I'm kind of looking forward to winter I might be able to get some building done.

Mine has 156 Sq. in of wing area which is about right for this size.
It's been patterned after Mark Rittinger's Python. Uses the same airfoil. If you have ever flown one of these you'll find that it's very efficient.

NICE 109 RC!
clean clean lines! mine is so haphazard,
it should be painted yellow, and used for a curvy road ahead sign!

looks like you are are going with direct drive, what kind is it?
what is the intended ESC? Prop?

i just did my maiden using a 400speed gws direct drive,
9 cell (just 350s thats all i had laying around), and a 10amp ESC (only one i have).

the motor was only 10 bucks at balsapr, with 2 5043 props. Unfortunately the props are very small, and didnt produce enough thrust. I upgraded to the 6030 and it did a little better, but it didn't get far before laying back down.

do i need a 20amp ESC? if so what size, kind prop can i get for the direct drive?

i think i may just scrap this project untill i have enough dough for a 20amp, and buy a 400sp geared, with 7or8 cell 600s.

20 amps???

wow, I guess I'm lucky my 11-amps (11? weird number, I know...) ESC still works...
