hanger 9 Sopwith Camel
Can any one point me in the right direction. I have just purchased a Hanger 9 Sopwith Camel 60" span weight approx 7lbs.
I have an Aveox 46/43/2 brushless motor [pushes my 1/4 scale boat about 20mph boat weighs 30lbs] it has a 99amp W/C speed controller I have 2 x 6 cell 3700 mha nMh batteries. I also have a Mega 7 brushed motor never used. An Astro 40 geared cobalt with a 35amp Pegasus speed controller unused. Questions are which plant to use and what size prop |

OH I'd definietly use the astro geared 40...
http://www.astroflight.com/store/sto...L442ocbsc5n9d5 for props and cell counts suitable for it. For a camel you porobably want to over prop it a bit and use a coarse prop..I am simming up a 60" albatros, and hope to get away with not much over 3lb, and use an astro 15 geared. Something like a 20" prop is scaleish, but thats a bit impractical. Say a 15x10 on that 40 of yours. Then use a 4s LIPO pack to keep the amps and weight down. Should pull around 35A or so..about 250 Watts nicely matched..enough to fly a 5lb Camel realistically I'd say. |

I'd agree that the Astro 40G is the best choice of what you have listed, but you're going to need more like 550-600w to fly like it should, assuming a AUW of 7.5-ish to 8 lb.
It would help if you could list the out-of-the-box weight of the airframe, so I can plug the numbers into Motocalc for the Astro. I used an empty weight of 88 oz. to play around with some numbers for my own intended brushless setup (haven't bought the plane yet), but that 88 oz. is only a guess. If you could weigh the plane before you start putting any gear in it, I can give you a Motocalc recommendation for prop and battery selection, for use with the Astro. Rick |

just weighed the plane 8lbs 7 oz gross I'll guess nett would be 7lbs. I tried flying with the A 40 G 13x8 prop 2 x 6 cell 3700 mah nmh could not get off tyhe ground used 15 x 6 just managed to get off the ground for about 20ft. Would I do better with a 17" prop and two 2500 Li Poly.
Can you answer this question I was given a Midwest kit partialy built a Extra 300S I have now finished it. Specs are 80" W/Area 1162 servos giant scale Gas power 2.2 - 2.8 [5] dry weight is 7 1/2 lbs . I have and Aveox 46/43/16 brushless would this be enough power if so what batteries would I needr |

Sounds like you need more RPM (thrust) out of the motor than 14.4v of NiMH cells are giving you.
Going to a 5S or even a 6S 4400mah or so LiPo would give a lot better thrust, and reduce weight a good bit at the same time. The pack voltage under load would be better too. Should make a world of difference. Rick |

You should be running that motor on 18 cells, (5 or 6 Lipos). Take a look at the Astro website for prop sizes depending on your voltage.
If you tried with 12 X 3700 cells, they weigh about 25oz. The Astro 40 geared weighs about 15 oz. Add about 10 oz. for a typical radio installation and your equipment weight is 50 o. That makes the airframe come out at about 85oz. - (pretty close Rick!) Try more voltage - Lipos if you can, round cells if you need the noseweight. Martin |
