Cool

What to extend? Motor wires or Battery wires?

I've got a new twin motor plane coming soon and I know that I'm going to have to extend the wires on my 2 thunderbird 18 speed controllers to make sure that everything can contact. If I have to extend either the motor or the battery wires which ones should I extend. I have read different things all over the place.

Thanks

I would say that you should extend battery wires because motor wires are driven in PWM (pulses) and therefore will generate high noise level if too long.

Check out Issue #3 of the Castle Scribe above.

Joe talks about twin setups and his final statement is to run both ESC's of a common battery source (very important).

That being said it would be the battery wires that should be extended.( common battery pack in the fuselage tied into the two or more motors) BUT!

Joe has also said that long battery wires could cause voltage spikes that could blow up the ESC's.

So the definite answer is WHO THE HELL KNOWS?

Hopefully some one from Castle will chime in and give us a definitive answer once and for all.

Think that most of the guys from Castle are up at NEAT.

I'm not looking for a response from them until the first of the week.

Extend the wires on the motor side.

Yup...works for me...on the Pondside there was simply NO CHOICE as the AXI motor is about 6 inches above the fuselage and the esc is under a hatch so the motor wires were lengthened four inches so the connections would be under the hatch as well.

Joe,

Thanks for the reply.

Do you have a recommendation for the max length for battery wires in general.

Thanks,

Don

We recommend a maximum combined length of 12" between the ESC and battery.

Thanks Joe.

What does "combined length" mean?

Did you get over to NEAT?

No, unfortunately. Maybe next year. Shawn and Lee represented us this year. Lucky dogs!!! Can't wait to see the pictures and videos they bring back...I really hope Lee brought his 8mp digital SLR camera and snapped a bunch of pics. Combined length meaning the wire provided on the controller and the wire on the battery combined should not be more than 12".

Thanks for the info Joe,

What about the max length from the ESC to the Motor. Since that's the one I'll be increasing What should be the max length for each motor wire?

Thanks again.
