Yesterday I went to the field and it was very windy. Between 15 and 20 Kts!
The bird flew very well but not so easy to manage.
Anyway a great plane indeed.

Well, the micro edf version did alright! Due to the battery being quite heavy I found that having it mounted to the side of the fuse was not on center enough, so for the test flights I just stuck it to the top....which also had some downsides

Overall I discovered that the edf was more than enough power. Take off below half throttle, level flight at 1/4! Full throttle was only attempted twice , inside the one basketball court sized gymnasium that was pretty exciting!

As walls were hit and rough landings had, the 2mm depron foam wings deteriorated pretty quickly, but I had a ball flying it and will likely construct a second with better battery placement, and some wing re-enforcements.

Here is a duplex delta 20 I built. I have flown it a few times and it flies great.
I use an cobra 2204/58 1080 KV motor that puts out 80 watts with a 3 cell battery and I use an APC 7 x 5 prop.
I have made a few modifications to the design. The biggest is that the sides are made of 3mm depron and there is a 6mm piece in the middle of the tail so it is the correct width. There are also 3mm pieced to double up the sides at the former. The sides at the nose are separate pieces and they are made of 6mm depron.

I recently crashed my first duplex delta.
I decided to build a new one with a few modifications.
The biggest modification was I added a rudder to the plane.
The second modification was that I made the elevons 2 inches thick instead of the original 1 inch.
And the final modification was I moved the forward wing mounting locaton forward and made the front piece of the wing hinged so I can use the front part of the top wing as a battery hatch and not have to remove the entire wing to change batteries.

Thought the elevons where quite sensitive already, especially the elevator function. Plz let us know your experience with the increased elevons chord!

Dear Mr. Prop-er,

Hi, my name is Paco and I am a total newbie when it comes to RC flying (30 years modelcar experience) and like to start with this plain purely for the simplicity it can be build from 6mm depron. Although at the start it is mentioned it is easy to fly for beginners does that also mean if you have no experience except for some simulator flights yet? I have limited space for flying (soccerfield) and I am not into complex aerobatics, just learn how to go left and right and up and down and stay in the air. I am modeler so do not want a RTF or ARF plain. I like the idea for DIY with simple materials and tools. DX6i is already on its way.

Hello Paco,

Good intentions! I really hope you'll enjoy RC model flight. However, a soccer field will not be enough. You'll need plenty more space than that!

Building the Duplex Delta sounds easy enough, and experienced builders can finish one in a few evenings. You'll probably have to learn the hard way, where building the first plane takes you way more time to build.

I wouldn't recommend this plane for making your first flights.

There's so much to learn. You'll be way better of with a slow flying trainer made from EPP or similar with clear instructions. It 'll have self-stablizing flying properties, lowering your piloting workload. That's essentials while learning to fly RC.

The duplex Delta doesn't have these properties. It's quite fast, reacts fast to small control inputs, and needs to be corrected all the time. Don't get me wrong; it can be flown be someone having about ten to twenty hours experience successfully flying an Easystar clone.

Still, if you are a fast builder, with enough time and motivation at hand, and are willing to do multiple repairs, or even build multiple Duplex delta's, you might succeed learning to fly using a duplex delta!

If you're really determined to do this, build the larger one (30"), build it light, with small brushless and battery. This will reduce flying speed, giving you more time to control the plane, and see the result of your input actions. Reinforce the nose section with some carbon rods. You'll appreciate this later on.

Hi Vincent,

Thanks for the advice. I dont mind building and repair but will skip the DDD for now. Any other recommendations in Depron building style slow outdoor flyers? Electric sailor with knicked end tips or what they are called to get no stick action level return. If needed with some input I am able to draw one myselve. Need to know wing ratio and wing style and such and other limitations. Made a sample in Coreldraw for a 100 cm version but do not know if I am on the right track or just have to try and error :-).

Prop-er listed 3 great trainers. I would suggest the second one (PIANKO) as the motor & prop are behind the wing and less likely to break during the inevitable crashes.
When you build, pay attention to weight. Don't use unnecessary amounts of tape, glue, etc.
The lighter your build, the slower it will fly, and less damage will occur when mistakes bring it down for unscheduled landings. Good luck

Hi Jupa... Welcome to the board... I totally agree with Prop-er that the DDD albiet a great plane, is not a good starting plane... I tried it too early and had many good flights, but more repair sessions. There are a multitude of great planes up here, and many good starter planes.

Here is my nickle's worth.... I have built about 8 "Slowly" models for friends, and my grand daughters for whom it was their first. It is a RET with great flight characteristics, you almost need to try to crash it. The dihedral makes it self correcting... and it is a fairly simple build.

The pdf's are located in the first post in this thread, and there are a lot of build tips along the way. Also if you go to youtube and search for Gary Grimley, you can find many videos of this plane in action, both on water and in the air.
