Really amazing work, Barrett. It's very obvious that you have a real feel for the intricacies of the shapes of your model subjects, and a good understanding of how to achieve those shapes in your chosen material - cardboard, of all things. Please continue to enlighten us.

Yama videos

I'm startin to get a little needy of a video documentary about the Yamato. Anyone know where I can get a good documentary?

I've tried Amazon.com, I'm mad at eBay, and all I get on Froogle is Space Battleship Yamato anime. I have also looked on the History Channel website.

Of course I am aware of the recent Yamato movie in Japan and I passed up the chance to get it on DVD when I was there a couple of weeks ago because my DVD player can't play Japanese DVDs, and anyway, no subtitles.

Do you guys remember that A&E 2-hour doc `Sink the Bismark` back in the 90s? That's exactly the kind of video I would love to find.

If you have any ideas, let me know. Thanks!

Why does it have to be a video? Won't a reference book suffice?

Well, I like to have something on t.v. while I work. I have some good printed matter. A book with fantastic closeups of the 1/10 scale Yama.

Barrett, PBS ran a good special on the Yamato recently. It was an hour long production called The Sinking of the Super Ship. It had some rare shots of the ship and some really interesting interviews with some actual survivors of the ship and some of the US pilots who attacked it. They located and did a dive on the wreckage and had footage of the ship resting at the bottom of the ocean where it was sunk. Overall it was pretty good, definitely worth a look. Check with PBS about the availability of the tape or DVD? I've been following and enjoying your very impressive builds, keep up the good work! - Jim

Barrett, You're welcome. I'm glad to hear you found it and got it. I thought you'd have a pretty good chance of finding it as it just ran earlier this year. I taped it when it was on but not long after I loaned the tape to my brother in law who's the curator for the Naval Air Museum here in Alameda, CA, and I haven't seen it since, lol. I'll get it back someday. I watched it several times though while I had it. It's pretty cool, I think you'll enjoy it. - Jim

The interactive feature on the Nova site is quite interesting. I never knew the Yamato was sent out as a suicidal "honor" mission. The mindset of those folks was just bizzare...
