Thanks for the information. Turns out I fortunatly have many options for a power supply already on hand.

Oh, come on ! Don't tell me NOT to use flat hinges, until you tell me WHY not to use flat hinges. !
17,000 people can't be ALL wrong !

What 'chu got against flat hinges?

FYI- I just changed all the flat hinges to Robarts,in my new Rascal.
-except the flaps, and I used Ultracote hinges there.

I like guitar string instead of nichrome wire because it seems to stretch less under heat than nicrhome. Even stretched, like you found, it doesn't seem to affect cut thickness at all. I stick the foam in place to preload the string first, then turn on power, so that it starts with tension on it. Never had a problem.

i bought myself a hands free small item holder from hobbyking but found that the teeth on the alligator clips fanged the insulation on any wires i used in it, not to mention bit into the plugs

great grip, unfortunate "edge"

dug out some old and now pointless silicon fuel tubing and fixed that but good !

not only is the grip firm but gentle, it also acts as great thermal insulation making heating up small parts way easier as the rest of the device no longer acts like a giant heat sink

the pics below show the deal

I had a similar problem with my hands free device (not a hobbyking one) and I replaced one of my alligator clips with a clothes pin. Works well. Your method is quicker though.
