White Knight and Space Ship One

This week I watched a documentary of Burt Rutan winning the X - Prize.

Modeling both the White Knight and the Space Ship is a big undertaking.

But maybe just the White Knight for starters. I am wondering if anyone has already modeled the White Knight?

Ivan Munninghoff and Greg Moore (the jet columnist from Flying Models magazine) built a White Knight a few years ago, never got to the Space Ship One part as far as I know. I saw it at Arizona Jets but it was too windy to fly.

Spaceship one was a free plan in QEFI last year :-)

Hmm, was it flat roadkill or with a scale body?

Well believe it or not it wasn't roadkill. It was fully built up freeflight style. ie: formers and stringers, with a conventionaly built flat bottom wing. Power was edf50 with fiego motor on 3s lipo's. Seen one in the flesh but not in the air. Worth a look at!

I picked up that same issue of QEFI and have been staring at the plans here and there.

the EDF50 sticks out the rear on two supports. i have been thinking about how to move it into the butt end and maybe make some panels that'll open when i apply power to it.

Maybe flush inlets with blow-in doors under the wing. But then one of those large rocket motors...

Greg Moore did fly his White Knight at the AZ jet rally. I spotted for him.It flew well but was touchy about the speed range. If he went too fast it would do really strange gyrations. I have begged Greg to let me build Spaceship One for him. He hasn't taken me up on it yet.
Take Care

Thanks for that Marty, glad it flew, wish I could have seen it. I wonder what the gyrations were, flex in the airframe maybe due to air loads? That long thin wing and the long pods, might get some twist in the center section? Just guessing blind.

I recently saw a turbine Spaceship One flying (scratch built, no plans). It was stable with no bad tendencies, however, it could have had a gyro in it of course. I got the video if anybody is interested...
