Starting: P51 Electric Orange Style

After building a Gee Bee and Piper Cub from the plans from Scotta I think the time has come to do some designing myself. I just started working for a new company and after 5 years I got into touch with CAD again. This time I'm using Solid Edge. Not really needed for the job but just handy to know a little when customers have questions. After a 3 day course I can tell it ain't that simple but I'm getting there.

So what to build? Easy! A P51D mustang... has been on the wishlist ever since I was able to say aircraft...
90 cm wingspan, rougly the same length I think, weight 400 grams? Specs will follow.

My cousin "FlyingPJ" has volunteered to be the first beta builder...

Step 1:
Created the body with a 3 view:

Step 2:
Created a couple of formers:

Step 3:
Some more parts:

Step 4:
Started interlocking pieces to create a puzzle

So... what do y'all think? Is it gonna be something?

Cool. I really like seeing the progression. Wish my cad skills were up to doing something like this. What's really interesting is that you may be able to leverage your 3D model in solid edge to provide a FMS ( free flight simulator ) model of your particular plane, so you could fly it before it is even built.

Ggunners did this with t1mux's printed P-40 foamie in post 131 of https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...=357382&page=2.

You 3D guys amaze me! I hope to someday grow the skills needed to be able to design in a 3D program. I am trying, but it causes a lot of brain-cramps! I've tried a few different programs, but none are simple.

Meanwhile, I'll keep doing 2D/3-view stuff, and worship the mighty from down here

Top job
I love Scotta's plans and i see that this will be an aircraft i could love too.
I have built two Mustangs from balsa and both became toothpicks on there maidens.
I was going to build scotta's but i like a more scale look.
And being crap at using CAD, i can't design my own.
I had started to build one useing 3mm foam from a balsa plan, But i scraped that as it was becoming a nightmare to do.
I will watch this design and build with great intrest..
Good Luck,
PEZ

kdalhaus: there doesn't seem to be a compliant export in SolidEdge for metasequoia, will keep looking though.

Gene: don't think I got braincramps??? I'm getting at this point where you think... I could have.. should have... done things different. but hey, I didn't

PEZ: sorry to here about your mustangs, must have hurt. Maybe this one will be scale enough for your likings?

Some progress:

Look at this! I can create drawings as well

Starting to look like a plane:

Cool,
What size is the battery conpartment? And are you going to use the scoop as cooing for the battery's and ESC? I had a lot of problems with over heating of the batterys and ESC in my EO CUB. I have made three now, the inside of the third looks like Swiss Cheese To displace the heat.

Pezzer,
I've had no heatproblems so far, the scoop will be way to far back. My guess is that the batteries will have to be all the way up front. Probably under the motor. This bird has a long tail...
btw, I like Swiss cheese...

Looking awesome, Rico.... A work of art! You'll have to finish the design off with an animated GIF of the 3D wireframe rotaing in space

Are you looking at using Lipos?
as for my CUB. I went with Scotta's exact setup and even bought all the gear from him..
I ended up doing this (photo) to the battery compartment and i have found that i get an extra 2min's flight time..

Gene, your wish is my command....

Pezzer, I don't think I'd notice the 2 minute increase in flight time, but it's an option. I'm also flying lipo's.

Ricoj,

I talked to a friend that used to sell Solid Edge. He thought that if there wasn't a two-step export available using SE, the parent product -whose name I can't recall- might be able to do the export as it has more formats available.

I'm sending him the list of Mesoq. formats to see what he can do.
