E-flite Funtana, Edge or Fliton Edge?

so ive had enough of foamies, and i want something a little more permenant (something that wont fly apart when i punch full throttle). so im shopping around for my first balsa plane.
I was thinking of getting either one of the E-flite planes (funtana or edge). My LHS recommended the Fliton Edge as well, which i really like.
I have an Electron 6 rx, 4 s75 servos, a CC25, and a 1500mah 12c pack lined up and ready. id need a motor, and probably a second battery pack.
How would you rank these three planes?

from what ive seen, the fliton edge flies really nicely.
how about parts availability? hah i guess i shouldnt plan on crashing.

fliton, e-flight sucks imo when compared to fliton, extremeflight, bme, pa e.t.c...

If you don't mind building a kit, look at the stephens aero edge.

Probably the best 3D balsa parkflyer ARF in the world right now is the Extreme Flight Extra. Second place is probably a tossup between the Fliton Mini Extra and the PA Katana Mini. Obviously, not everyone will agree, but I talk to dozens of pilots every day in the course of business, and this is the concensus of those conversations. Other designs which receive high praise in balsa 3D parkflyers are the Rogue and the Quiet Storm. If you are getting the idea that Fliton planes are well respected for good flight characteristics, you're right.

EFlight planes are not all bad, but they are built like trucks and their weight reflects this. The Brio is by far the nicest of the EFlight planes, but it's heavy compared to a Fliton or Extreme Flight plane. It appears to fly very well despite the weight. The EFlight Mini Edge is a nice, well-built plane, but because of the its weight it is rather difficult to fly in 3D mode. The Mini Funtana is even a little worse than the Mini Edge for most people...although I flew one belonging to a customer the other day, I hadn't flown one in months- I actually had a good time with it. However, the difference between an old design like that and something new like the Extreme Flight is just..well...Extreme.

Balsa profile planes I put ina seperate category. They fly a lot like fomaies and it's hard to go wrong with a balsa profile plane like the Extreme Flight Yak.

wowo! thanks for the information! keep it coming. ive seen the massive numbers of threads on the Katana Mini but never knew where to find them. Thanks!

The Extreme Flight Extra is probably a little too big and too spendy for me. although i really do like the looks of it.

i heard flitons were good, but came with pretty horrid instructions and need a lot of modifications (like strengthening of landing gear). perhaps it wouldnt make a good first balsa plane.

That leaves the katana mini as my first choice as of now. why have i never seen this plane at my LHS? anyhow, keep that info coming.

I agree with blucor - profiles are in a different category. I am still gonna grab that Fliton from you blucor - just wanna get the 3D thing down before I go full fuse

I am flying a TMPro Katana EP (see pic). This makes a great first balsa 3D plane, as will the EF Yak blucor mentioned (which I will be getting soon).

The Katana is a great plane IMO. It flies very true and does anything you ask of it, i.e. all the 3D maneuvers you can conjure up.

You can get the ARF verion here:Katana EP

If you wanna check out my vid, you can do so here (75 MB, sorry 'bout that):Katana EP vid

Nothing spectacular, but I am learning

will the fliton take my Hacker A20-26M motor? or would i need something with a little more zip?

I've flown em all and when it comes to pure flight characteristics, my vote goes to the Fliton aircraft. Vids of my Mini-Edge, Mini-Extra, and Rogue below.

Hey Greg,

I've seen all your vids - very cool stuff! If you have to choose between the Fliton Edge and Extra, which one would it be...

I'd go with the Mini-Extra purely for personal asthetics (I look the extra look a little better). Flying wise, they both fly very, very, very similar.

edge has less coupling in knife edge then the extra, the rouge has a lot of KE coupling.

I agree with everything said above about Fliton aircraft, and I'll add that if the MiniEdge has less coupling than the MiniExtra, it must be zero. If a person does not want a larger aircraft like an Extreme Flight (which is still #1 in my book) then Fliton is probably the way to go. The only other parkflyer in this class is the Hyperion 3DeLight, which is not as nicely built as the Flitons (It's cheap and you have to replace the landing gear), but flies every bit as well (maybe a little better) and is less expensive (It's cheap).

Snowball, I'd have to second the vote for the little Fliton Edge. I've been enjoying mine now for a weekend or so, and it is a good flyer.

The mods you mentioned needing are not that excessive, don't cost much and are quick to do. I documented mine in the Fliton Edge thread on this same forum.

Good luck!

well I have flown both the fliton edge and extra extreme flight extra, pa km, eflight Mf, eflight edge.

Here is what I have to say:

overall the best flying is the Fliton Edge, the biggest problem is that it hates being in a hover, but if you go by the recomended motor and keep the weight under 22 oz with a NUETRAL CG it will have 0 coupling in KE. I generally benchmark a plane by its KE perfomrance without having to put in ANY mixing. KE makes a huge difference when you are harrier rolling, precesion rolling...

Some people like having the CG nose heavy to have less coupling. I ALWAYS set my planes to neutral CG, meaning they fly straight rightside up or upside down (no down elevator needed inverted)

RARELY have I ever had a plane that didn't have coupling in KE with a nuetral CG.

SO the best in its class is the Fliton Edge. You have to know 3-d very well for it do torque rolls/hovers, but it rolls awesome and very axial..

Then 2nd is the Extreme FLight Extra, great plane very smooth and increadible blenders! However it has KE coupling and needs to be mixed out, Coupling is worse on right rudder then left (typical for small electrics)

The 3rd is the Fliton Extra, MUCH MUCH better hovering and torque rolling then the fliton edge, however it has KE coupling very similiar to the extreme flight extra, AILERONS are super strong, SUPER ROLL RATE!

As for the rest, they are all pretty good, I like the PA km but it lacks rudder, its the most stable of all the minis... Once again we have KE coupling you will have to mix out...

So basically unless you love hovering and torque rolling get either the Extreme FLight extra or the Fliton extra. If you know how to do 3d really well and want a smooth perfect flying plane get the fliton edge.

I think Alkaline's comments are pretty appropriate (though I don't find the Edge to be at all difficult in a hover) - None of these birds is for a first time 3D'r. They genuinely are more appropriate for someone with some foamy or other 3D experience under their belt.
