Airfoil Design Software?

Does anyone use an Airfoil Design Program when creating their projects. If so which one is the best?

I have used PROFILI, a free download air foil program.

Do a search here, you will find the link.

This is a link to a very nice free program (Profile) that allows you to change camber, thickness and add washout. Best used by folks wanting to cut foam cores, as it will create the image of the template as well as the airfoil.

It may be the best of the free airfoil plotting programs.

Thanks, I will give it a try.

I have WingMaster 98 I am selling. Over 250 preset airfoils. and Unlimited make your own ones. Just tell it what you want, it draws it up! I really like it.

CompuFoil is the most popular, I believe, software for model airfoil layout, for both built-up and foam core designs. It's capability is impressive, and the demo version is free. At least try the demo before buying any other.

I like Winfoil from Malcom Hardy in Austrailia.

It does a super job of airfoil plotting, has the aerodynamic data and an airplane design wizard to help you size tails, estimate performance etc.

For about $40 it can't be beat IMHO.

Do a search on Winfoil.

Airfoil Design Software

Hi Tim,
if you're still interested in Airfoil Design Software you might want to check this out:

If you are actually looking to design the airfoils, you want to use something XFOIL based. This would be XFLR5 or a version of Profili. I've used a previous version of Profili, but now use XFLR5 pretty exclusively/extensively for airfoil and wing design. If you want to play with existing airfoils rather than working from scratch, Profili is likely the better choice as it comes with an airfoil library (at least if you pay for it).

If you are looking to design foils where transonic flow becomes a serious consideration, or where supersonic or hypersonic flow is involved, then I don't know what to suggest. XFOIL based programs should handle mild transonic flow but beyond that I do not know.

PS - If you want to get an idea of some of what can be done in XFLR5, look through any of my threads. You'll find many examples from my work.

Tin Pusher, you're not really giving us much to work with. You haven't said if you want to design and "test" and airfoil shape or if it's the ribs and spar layouts you're after. Some more information would help us help you more.

I DS slower than I build!

Uhmmmm...I don't think Tin Pusher is around any more. His last RCGroups activity was Jun 29, 2004 07:21 PM.

This has got to be a record for resurrection of an ollllllld thread!

Looks like we have an advertiser looking realllllly hard to scare up business. The resurrection of this thread is ED Team's one and only post.

DOH! I got burned big time on this one! I typically check to see if threads with more than a few replies that just "appear" are old or not.
