LRK winding is easy.. Try it!


It seems some people have the idea LRK is hard to wind. I think the way I wind LRK is easy to do. Easier than ABC cdrom winding.

First I to cut the wire into 3 equal lengths. One for each phase. Do a test wind to determine the length. I cut 32 inch lengths of AWG24 gobrushless newbie wire for this Komodo stator. Next I find the center of each length of wire and mark it with a sharpie. I wind from the middle of the wire and repeat for the other half of the phase.

EDIT: To correct the semantics, this is called by some "distributed LRK" That is a 12 tooth wind with 10 or 14 magnet poles. Classic LRK is 6 of 12 tooth wind...every other tooth.

Wind one tooth CW, the adjacent tooth CCW. Repeat on the other side and you have completed the first phase.

After you have completed winding, you will see all ends are exactly the same. It does not matter which is start or end.

Now for connections.

For Delta, connect adjacent pairs together. Very simple.

For wye, tie together any 3 wires that are 120 degrees apart. The other 3 will go to the ESC.

Also, isnt the above schema dLRK (12/12tooth) not LRK(6/12 tooth)?

What is the diffrence in the two? Will LRK provide better thrust/lower amps/higher RPM? Just wondering.

Its a higher torque winding schema for 6 or 12 tooth stators. Most winds use larger wire than a similar ABC 9/12 cd-rom, which increases has lower resistance and better efficiency, as well as smoother throttle control.

More often than not, the performance increase isnt staggering, but definately measurable.

I found a gobrushless 12 tooth stator and tried some more winding pics.

The wire is measured and cut to length. The middle is marked with a sharpie. This method starts in the middle, not on the end. The winding is symetrical. There is no start, no end, no need to keep track of anything, as long as you wind every phase the same.

Here is a classic Lrk. Using the wire cut to length helps here too. You need to thread the wire for the last few turns because you are filling in past the opening between the teeth.

Is there a way to determine the big difference because i have a ABC wound motor with 25 turns and was thinking of doing the lrk! how many turns would i need to turn on an lrk wind to get almost double torque of gthe 25t cd-rom motor!
