GWS J-3 Gets Flaperons, Build Photos
Got a GWS J-3 for cheap as a parts kit, then got a new JR 662 programmable 6 channel.
I read the transmitter manual and am amazed at its potential for so little $$$$. I have also been following threads on the ZERO as I have one RTF, but am a born again RCer after 24 years, and am not quite ready to try it. So, I decided, what the hey, build an aileron trainer! Don't know how much value it'll be, but I'm having a blast with my (other) stock cub, and am a builder.... I've posted a few shots. The blue foam "servo tray" appears offset from the center "chordline" of the wing, but that's only due to the mold errors. The flaperons were simply cut 15mm from the trailing edge, beveled, and taped their entire length with extra decal material. I stiffened them with .32 wire. The flaperon actuators are a hand bent copy of my ZERO's system. I used an empty stick ink pen cartridge as sleeve "bearing" material. I'll let you know how she flys in a few days. This site has been a gold mine for me. Thanks to all you who post! -Michael |

Flight Report
Well, I've been having a good time!
The Flaperon Cub is a blast! I've changed to a GWS dual-motor A-drive powerplant, and it climbs at around 15 to 20 degrees. I've mixed the ailerons and rudder so that turns are "scale". That is, she rolls on the longitudinal axis into a turn. No more skidding around the corner. Banks using ailerons alone are sluggish. If I did it again, I'd make the ailerons bigger; the 15mm is adequate, but not aerobatic. Flaperons droop about 20 degrees, and are intended to maximize lift for ROG takeoffs. Good roll rates with flaps down. I put a steerable tailwheel on her as well, to minimize ground loops! I've got a Zero I'm still training on, a scratch aileron twin-boom trainer (below), a Ripmax speed 300 F-16 pusher that I couldn't pass by for the price but don't dare launch, and a scratch hovercraft. The hover craft is detailed at https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...threadid=55556 SO, my stock j-3 is hanging from my sons' ceiling, my Zero is an scary blast, and the Full House J-3 has logged 10 hours or so, most at night under the lights! It's my relaxing fun-flyer! I'll be happy to post more details if anyone wants 'em. Best, Michael |

Thats a good looking EDF-50 wing! It might be a BIT too big for a single, but is just crying out for a double

Thanks Paul!
Right you are. I built the thing as an entry to BackYard Flyers deli tray contest. I used a Clark Y airfoil. My first scratch effort. Now I can't wait to do another and another etc.... She flew, but not briskly! You nailed it, with twice the power, yikes! I'm putting a GWS 380 on the wing tonight, as a pusher. Something about those EDFs just makes my creative mind buzz! The hovercraft is a hoot! _Michael |
