Recommendation for 1st EDF Jet?

Hi,

I'm interested in getting into EDF, and would like a recommendation for my first EDF Jet (Trainer)? Possible a model that I can grow with?

I have some experience with gas engine highwing R/C planes, and some R/C heli experience, as well.

I've been out of the sport for awhile, and I can't seem to stay away.

Thanks in advance!

Flash E-74 for sure. Has a couple quirks but overall its a great plane. There has been alot of discussion about it lately, especially about covering and aileron linkages.

If you prefer an all over wooden built you may look at the Alpha Jet at Hoellein.

Competitive price. Excellent cnc cut parts. Fun to built easy to fly. Motors from speed 480 to brushless 480s possible.

Hoellein will ship to the US.

Balsa Flies Better!
Actually my first jet was the foamie A-7 sold through although it's now met its demise. The advantage of the foamie is its low EDF (emotional debt factor)and flying a jet is a bit different than prop planes. I'm now moving to the F-16 although I think Kevin Cox's F-18 is going to be abuilding one of these days, months, years...

If you're not comfortable with something at least the speed of a Zagi (faster is preferable) then I'd fly something else to get my skill level up.

The Alphajet is available in the US through EAM.

AlphaJet: http://www.eam.net/Hollein/alpha_jet.htm

EDFs: http://www.eam.net/EAMRC/edf.htm

According to Dave at EAM who has one, it launches very well from a hand launch.

Hey,

First of all, I want to thank everyone for their advice/recommendations. This is definitely a friendly forum, full of nice and
helpful members!

Currently, I'm still trying to decide on just what I should start out with. The E-74
sounds nice, so does Steve Neill's Jet Trainer(Not out yet)?

Sam, I've never flown a Zagi, so I don't know
how fast/quick it is? And for me, since I've been out of the sport for a couple of years, my biggest problem may be getting use to the feel/controls/reaction time of flying again?

Back when I had my little highwing gas engine trainer, EDF was not out yet? Or maybe it was in its early stages?

We did ROG takoffs, so bungee/hand launching is all new to me.

Ideally, I would need something that I could maybe hand launch/ROG takeoff, throttle back, once airborne, and then just tool around in the sky a bit? Just so I can get acclimated to EDF flying.

At any rate, I'm in no rush, so keep the advice/recommendations coming.

By the way, I'm an ex-Naval Aviator(NFO). So
my love of jets carries over into R/C flying. Although, the two are quite different.

The Flash is very well behaved. I was told about being careful in the turns w/EDF and I was worried about it, but when I flew the plane it did not fall off to the side in the turns or anything. Great forgiving airplane.

you did not state if you have a budget, Just in case you want a low buck approach check out the Minx. You can build it from plans thru EFI or the Electric Jet Factory now has a Kit. Considering the plans will cost about 1/3 of the kit, I would go that route. The Minx fits your stated needs, and does it on 7 or 8 600ae cell and a cheap motor. It is small, and a nice flier.

Greetings-

A retired Navy man - good stuff! What by chance did you fly? I grew up with my Father being a Naval Aviator flying Banshees, Skyrays and Crusaders as well as S2Fs and the like with VU-1.

Thanks for all of the continued recommendations!

Mark, seems like your father flew in some
classic military aircraft. Myself, I have flown in the following: T-34, T2 Buckeye,
P3 Orion, and the F14.
