If you get a "Y" connector, you can have 2 aileron servos run off the single aileron channel.

Okay, I have attached two pictures showing where I balance my Tiger Moth with the Himax HC2210-1180 Brushless Outrunner direct drive and 2-Cell, Li-POLY.

Thanks Chuck for the details on the CG.

It comes out right at the 35mm from the bottom wing leading edge and when held like the pic from Lancer, thanks again, it has the nose tipped down a bit.

Well, it looks like she is about ready to maiden.
It has a Feigao in the gear box with a 3S 600 PQ pack swinging an APC 9 X 6 SF prop. AUW is 8.9 oz.

I have the wing on using one #64 band aside. I added some wire to the landing gear, but it still seems like it may need more.

This is a delicate plane and no doubt should be flown in near zero wind much like my PLH Camel.

One ? about the foam. The rudder is a bit warped to one side and I was wondering if anything can be done to adjust the foam without breaking it?

Hi Carlos.
Long time no chat .

This was a gift from a friend who wanted her to be flown again. Funny, I now have 3 GWS planes. True though this is the smallest plane I have yet.

Thanks for the visual on the CG. I hope she has a good maiden so I can add a pilot and more details. Yours looks great. Now I have four British planes. I need to get some US iron.

I'm still flying our Super Star too! Four years and 300+ flights on her.

Thanks for the come back! My grandson has one season with a slow stick. You are right, the 3D TM is probably going to be too much for him. He is in a 4-H sponsored RC club. The first year they built and flew the Slow Stick. He is supposed to move on to 3D next year. Can you recommend a foam 3D trainer that might be a better "next step" than the TM?

"Gypsy" Moth


Just finished my latest Moth.
I wanted something different, so I made it LOOSELY look like a Gypsy Moth. But just in the nose, and even that is just "similar". I made the nose completely out of a 2 litre soda bottle. Used GWS glue to join the parts. Pretty much all of it was it's original bends from the soda bottle. I lowered the motor so it came out of the middle of the nose, instead of the top.

I did my usual mod of cutting about 1/2 inch from the struts. I just like the way it looks when the top wing is lower.

The landing gear is modded kinda different. Many have used the extra forward wires to give support, but these are removable. They are bent so that they can be inserted into a carbon fiber tube that goes thru the "battery" area. A rubber band keeps them from coming out, and acts like a shock absorber. Works like a dream.

I installed Pull-Pull on this one. Not sure if it's truly lighter, considering you have to add extra control horns, but I like the way it's so precise, and looks nice too. I did not have to strengthen the eleveator, since I have a pull-pull on both sides acting at the same time. I put in a steerable tail skid too.

Now I just need a pilot or 2! And certainly a couple windshields and dash instrument print out. Will probably add some landing gear fairing too.

Flew it tonight, and it was a blast. It needed some down thrust, and right thrust, but handled great.

It's a real floater too. Dead sticking is a blast. With battery, it's at 10.7 oz. Oh, this is a 350 motor. So I'm pretty happy with that weight considering the extra horsepower.

I second that, especially good job on the new nose cowling, looks really great. One possible problem, tho, attaching the tail skid directly to the rudder, the stress from ground contact might cause the rudder hinge (tape?) to dislodge. Looking at the close-up photo of it, it looks like the depron has already creased from the stress.

Yeah, very nice custom job indeed.

Should you consider that the look is almost like the Gypsy and like slower flight characteristic then, I would recommend to make the wings like the Gypsy ....rectangular in shape instead of the sweap back like the Tiger Moth.

The Gypsy's wing will provide even slower flight and scale appeal.

The tail skid is 2 pieces of balsa laminated with the grain going about a 20* angle to each other. It actually goes all the way to the control horn, with the depron cut away right there. Then it's wrapped both sides with 1/64 ply.

(but I will keep a very close eye on it - I may end up puting some string from the control horns around the back of the rudder like a full scale Jenny).

The rudder and elevator is held on with CA hinge, with a razor slice in the depron. The rudder has 3 pieces (1/4 piece of Great Planes CA hinge). The elevator has 5 pieces (again each 1/4 piece of hinge).

So far, (2 days of flight) it's holding up great. I've even done a bit of taxiing on the grass.

The struts are just the stock plastic struts, but I glued some 1/16 balsa strips on the outsides. Just cut the strips separate, then stuck them on. Same for the cabanes.

I did think about doing full Gypsy moth wings, but they'd have to be raw depron I suppose. The "ribs" in the Tiger Moth wings would be at an angle to the wind if I turned them forward, and I don't think that would look or fly as good. Would be kinda cool to do the rolling pin trick on some depron for the airfoil. Who knows, I may eventually try that. Definately don't want flat wings, this isn't a 3D Moth. (nothing wrong with those, I've had one, but I just like the strength and looks of undercamber wings)
I think moving the upper wing over the lower would require more rear weight too, since the CG would move back so much.

I just flew it today in about 10knots of breeze. What fun! Love how this plane can handle that wind. Boy I've missed having a moth! My son put my last one into a goal post, so it's been a while. I have faster and more scale planes, but I'll always try to have a moth in the hangar!

Great job on the Gypsy Moth. I wish GWS would kit it! Reminds of "Out of Africa"--the great scenes of the Gypsy Moth flying over the African countryside.

I think I mentioned, many posts back, that Mrs. Lancer31's tribute to pioneer aviatrix Amy Johnson of England, in the form of a Pico TM, painted & marked the way Miss Johnson's DH-60 Gipsy Moth "Jason" was, did not have the straight wings, because Mr. Lin's engineers made the way-out-of-scale, re-inforcing rib-bulges, nice & straight with the air-flow, while DeHavillands just took Gipsy wings, modified the root to about 8 degrees sweepback, and left it at that, so all Tiger Moths have all their ribs pointing out, 8 degrees to the airstream. Also mentioned before is the reason for the change to the wing-set, was to move the top wing forward, with respect to the front cockpit, so that the guy in the front would have a little better chance to bail out of a dis-abled Moth. The Gipsy is actually a better flying machine, but the egress problem was critical. (I know you guys were dying to know that aviation trivia!).
