Red Tailed Hawk - close up and personal!

I was out doing a sortie today on a construction site and I saw this pair of hawks circling near by.

I headed over toward them but they drifted off. I continued to circle and gain altitude and they re-joined me... probably thinking I was in a thermal... well I was in a " 1/4 throttle electric thermal" but that did not stop them from circling with me and gaining altitude as well. I was lucky enough for them to allow me to get so close to them.

I had to make a few really tight turns to stay with them and that bothered them a bit so they headed off down wind... very cool to be in such close proximity!

TOO BAD I DID NOT GET THIS FOR THE LAST MONTHS PHOTO CONTEST

Oh well... it was FUN!

Congratulations!

CactusJack, I have long wanted to get a hawk picture from AP without success. Please tell us, with your experience under your belt, which way to point the camera? Do they prefer to fly above, below, beside you, under you? What would be best likelihood of framing them in flight? Or do they have a preference at all?

I point out front, even "eyeballing it" from the ground I think is easier than pointing out the wing... in MOST A/P cases, but I was really suprised to see I captured them... Although I tried I was not using my video downlink to frame them... just eyeballing and luck.

I will say that most of the time I've thermaled with hawks it might be better pointing out the wing since I seem to be on the opposite side of the circle...

like today when I would get behind them to frame up they would just circle tighter... I think if pointed out the wing they would feel comfortable on the opposite side from you.

But I think LUCK has a lage part in all this too!

Very nice and unique shots! What a stroke of luck to have those guys form up on you. It must have been tough with the forward facing camera to not scare them off while trying to get a shot.

Good job CJS!

Nice shots! However don't be seen flying towards them or after them. There are discussions going on in the DS and Sloping threads about sites and fields being shut down because someone was seen by a Park Ranger or Bird Watcher who reported them being "harassed". Even if they fly to you, stay away, as they are protected species and the fines and jail times are incredibly harsh.
Even picking up a feather from one will land you 10 years in jail! Our hobby doesn't need any more bad raps and laws, please steer clear.
