Yellow Aircraft F-18 Twin EDF

I was up in Reno yesterday for the SP400 pylon races there. I know your saying, what does this have to do with EFD. Well, I had the pleasure to meet Gordon Myers from the Reno area. He brought along a little something to tease our eyes. I'll let him explain as it's his project. He's doing a great job with much custom work inside to fit the fans and save weight. Great job Gordon!
I have A Yellow F18 single that is almost done with conversion to EDF. Right now the Yellow F18 single with 2 midi fans, Aveox 1412 2y's, 32 cells RTF wieght is 11.75 lbs. Conversion took some work, all new ducts and recut wood but the RTF weight seems very good. I am using Spring air #301 slimline retracts with out the scale struts which is pretty much what you would get from Yellow Aircraft.

Check the picture, Greg. Isn't showing up at the time that I write this.

I was planning to do the exact same project, but I was going to go with a lot more cells. I'm interested in hearing how this works out.

The picture is there, it's my ISP that is the trouble. They were just bought out by a larger company and the switchover makes things intermittant. Sorry to anyone that can't see it. I'll contact them (the ISP) but you know how that can be. All I can say for now is keep trying back, it will eventually work. If you'd like to see some more pictures, send me an email.

That sure is a great looking project and I wish Gordon all success.

However, with a Kv of only 1450, the setup will draw around 20 - 23A per motor (assuming Gordon has 16 cells per motor), so he could be rather light on input watts.

IMHO I'd expect at least 20 cells per motor to be needed here, for 30+ amps.

Just my thoughts

The bold type in my 1st post was from an email he had sent me prior to our meeting face to face. He said yesterday he'll probably use 40 cells total, now that's what I call performance! I checked it out well and there isn't a whole lot of room for a battery pack in there. He may have to split the pack up into multiple packs. Perhaps we can get him to check in here and fill us in with some more info. Are you reading this Gordon, welcome to Ezone fame?

I originally was starting with 40 cells for this project with a RTF wieght of 12.70 lbs. The Yellow Aircraft F 18 flys very well in glow configuration at 13 pounds. Robert at EJF suggested starting with 16 cells per motor to play some games with wing loading. I think that 36 would be a better minimum for the weight versus Midi fan thrust. But 40 would definitely provide very good thrust.

Just to give you and idea on weights. The plane kit parts out of the YA box weighed 5 lbs. I am down to 3.87 lbs in my lightening excercise. Very promising.

I have been documenting this with pictures and tracings of the new wood parts and will create a PDF file for others that are interested.

Who says you can't carry large planes in an Audi TT?

Should work great. I have the same power plant in my PFS F-86. On 16 cells I'm at 28,500 RPM per WeMoTec this is nearly 4 lbs of thrust. If the The plane stays less than 12 lbs. With 8 lbs of thrust it should be a great flier. Good Luck!

Hey Gordon,

I am getting 30 amps and 503 watts out of my 1412/2Y and 16 cell 2400's. I am flying a 6 pound Jetster and it flies great with plenty of power. 18 cells will put you close to the limit of these motors. I know that people are using 20 cells but I would not try it for a long term set-up. I have fried a few aveox motors in my time
Your project should do great considering that my Jetster is a very draggy airframe with fixed gear. I will be using this set-up in my Airworld ME262 that finally arrived. Awesome kit indeed!!!!!!

I sure wouldn't want to argue with your measured currents and rpm

But ... 1450rpm/V X 1.2V/cell x 16 = 27840rpm

and that's off load.

Load up for 30A, and rpm will fall significantly.

I'm puzzled

FA-18 threads sure can get attention.

Things are moving fast. Retracts are installed, and all servos (5 Futaba 3002's, 2 3101's) and linkages are installed except for the rudders/ nose gear steering servo.

Almost ready to start glassing and painting.

I am still looking for a pair of ESC's good for up to 20 cells. Jeti's would have been neat to try but they only go up to 16 cells. Any suggestions??

Also looking for a pair of Aveox 1412 2Y's. These also seem to be in short supply.

Gordon, man you work fast! In regards to finding a pair of motors and controllers, have you tried <a href= target=blank>CSR</a>? They seem to have the best prices I've seen. He always has goods for sale on Ebay and they seem to go for less than list price. Keep up the good work Gordon!<img src=>

GregG- I'm not working that fast!! Alot of the things that I have completed were sitting on the work bench curing or I did not have the time to place them in the plane before I loaded the plane into the car to show you. I hate to say how many times I had to redesign something or recut a part thru this conversion process.
