Could an RG15 foil work for a plank?


Just curious...

I have an extra set of 60" span RG15 cut EPP cores, in a fairly wide, 9" root x6" tip chord. Could these work as a plank? Would it handle horrible?

The design I'm pondering is actually a 3 control surface plank type deal but I think it would be still considered a plank right?

yeah it would work but you have to put relfex into the elevons they are not that impressive though , but they do work

Don,

SteveW is correct, it would fly, but you'd have to reflex the elevons somewhat.

It's worth pointing out though that RG15 with elevons reflexed a few degress up isn't RG15 any more. It's something else and expecting performance similar to that of RG15 is optimistic to say the least.

Best thing you can do to any plank is give it a fuselage so you can run your RG15 wing as an RG15 wing and use a tailplane to control pitch instead of messing up a perfectly good wing section.

The problem is the airfoil must be reflexed almost all the time in order to fly. This puts the RG-15 airfoil out of its low drag range so you are constantly flying at higher drag values. You are better off to design your wing with an airfoil designed for this purpose i.e. reflexed TE type airfoil that has low drag even with the TE reflexed. Airfoils such as MH-45 fill this requirement yet have very low drag.

crazy you were out maidening something "similar" to what I was brainstorming..

Good to know it flies and congrats on the maiden!!!

I think that if I make it 3 control surface, but still plank-ish, I might be able to still run the slight camber in the ailerons.. dang I don't know...

I've heard of a number of planks using the RG15 with reflexed elevons and getting very satisfying performance. Like the above, I wasn't expecting much, but it actually turned out to be pretty good. Doing some searches on here would probably turn up more info, it wasn't all that long ago this was being discussed and experimented on (with planks).

Thanks Steve good to know..

I searched a bit but "rg15" and "plank" didn't turn up too much in the titles together.. If the elevator portion is about 20" long I'd think it shoud have some good authority. Just gotta try it I guess..

Definitely make sure to setup the mixing so you can do fullspan elevator, I suspect you may end up liking it better than central elevator alone. In my experience, anyways...

What's crazier is that my original idea was to do something similar to what you thought about - a short coupled tail. I messed with it for a while and decided I needed to get the stab up high to get out of the wing wash. At that point it would have required a fairly complicated elevator assembly, so the plan became to make a simple plank instead.
