Valenta 1/3 L-213a

OK, you guys asked for it. I just finished the model today, will aerotow next weekend at the Visalia aerotow meet. I used 9 HS-5945 servos on the ailerons, flaps, elevators, and rudder. HS-225mg for spoilers, HS-645 retract, tow release and brake. Used 4 JR Matchboxes. 2 3300 ma. batteries. Unless my scale is wrong it weighs 29 pounds. It only took 15 ounces of lead in the nose to correct the C.G.

Visalia Aero Tow Flooded

These pictures were taken Friday March 30, Word is that
the water will remain at this level for one week.
Im not sure the water level at the field will be down enough,
or be dry enough by the April 8 to do any flying.

Load her up and bring it to the KCSE aerotow at the end of April, we will tow you up. HKM -USA may have the new ASW28 there for its first flights also.

Wow Dennis...sure loook super and ready to rip up the sky. Pilot really sets it off nicely. 29 pounds...sure that's right? I weighed up my bare airframe before I started and it came in at 18-3/4 pounds. However, I don't have a retract and mine does not have as much carbon as yours.

How did you set up the 4 for each aileron servo? Also, would love to see how you set up the pull-pull rudder bellcrank and servo.

Steve, on the rudder, I used the glass rudder horn supplied, but the connectors they give you in the kit are too big, so I just used pull-pull cable directly on the horn to the servo, I skipped a bellcrank. I was trying to use the supplied pushrods with 2 rudder servos but once again no clearance for the larger ballinks they supply, so I went to 1 rudder servo, and skipped using the pushrods. My model weighed 21 1/2 pounds dry. I will try posting some more pictures tonight when I get home of the rudder mounting etc.

Well Steve, that will be a hell of a project, now if we only know someone with a towplane powerfull enough toget to altitude. Would imagine even the Pegasus would be laboring and the trick being not to overfly the towplane.
I can't wait to hear the flight reports on these! When will you start building it?

Richard, I'm almost done with both wings, fuse is next. I'm sure a Pegasus with a 100cc engine will tow it up nicely. I would think your G62 tug will do well. I'm guessing mine will come in around 21 pounds.

Dennis, thanks for the info, also interested to know how you wired your Matchboxes. I'm thinking that with my Profi 4000 TX I can program one aileron servo in each wing in the normal manner and then use a separate channel with a 13 point curve for the 2nd servo in each wing to precisely match the travel of the first. Anything amiss with that logic?

Steve, that sounds fine with the Profi. I just routed each aileron servo through the Matchbox and dial them in, Matchboxes are a great little accessory.
A Pegasus with a DA-100 will tow just about anything behind it, we have towed models over 55 pounds, it helps if the towpilot and glider pilot are experienced.
I am going to see if I can get my scale calibrated, the model doesn't feel like it weighs that much.

Thanks Dennis, greatly appreciate all your helpful info. Making good progress with my big Blanik, feel confident it will be finished in time for the JR event, see you there for its maiden flight!

And many thanks to Bob from SoaringUSA for importing the L-213a, there are many little detail items in the manufacture of this model that made it a real pleasure to put together, things like the servos hatches on the wing and stabs that have a nut bonded into the wing skin to attach the servo covers, that kind of detail saves a lot of time, the fit of all the rudder hardware was incredible, I haven't seen this type of work in most of the German kits. I wil post some pictures of what I am talking about this weekend. Thanks Bob!
