Ever fly your 3m without the tip panels?


Mr Innocent and i have been talking about this alot....it occured to us both at the same time when we were watching Bob Bro talk to some of the f3f gusy without the tip panels on his....would an f3f ship fly with only the center panel?

I would have to say yes, it would fly with enough lift....but I don't have a plane to test it on, and my freinds all seem strangely wary of the idea of throwing their $1.5K model out over the gaping hole of death at laguna without a proven planform...I wonder why?

Anyways, we can't be the only ones who thought this...who's tried it? Anyone?

Actually the CG shouldn't change much since it's already under the
main wing. If anything it'd need to move forward a little because
without the curving tip panels the average center of lift would be further
forward (rectangular planform has an average center of pressure
further forward than one with an eliptical leading edge).

The relative surface areas of main wing and tail, and tail moment
would be totally wrong, but an over tailed plane should still fly OK
as long as the decalage is pretty close to zero.

Sounds like it would be unstable in the roll axis since you’d have less tip-mass and no dihedral. All in all a good thing to try with someone else’s ride.

What would happen? It would suck to fly, and $50 says the fuse comes back broken in two. Now back to doing homework!

No less stable than any other 1-1.5meter plane with full span flaperons
and no dihedral. Mainly I think the problem is wing loading (it'll need a lot
of wind, it'll fly very fast, and land very fast), and the huge tail moment
will make the pitch response kind of weird.

Which is why you don't see many 1.5M sailplanes* without dihedral .

I'm sure it would fly given sufficient wind--if slopers have proven anything, it's that with sufficient airspeed the "wind will rip the bring into a foil" and the magic will happen.

Of course, the better question is... WHY?

OMG Keith, of all people you should be shutting up. No one I know has crashed a heli in to a windshield two times.
