Plane for an Astro 010?

So I have this Astro 010 16turn Direct Drive. I'm wondering what plane to put it on. I'm looking for something fun. (aerobatic) I've heeard it works good with the Lil Hornet, but its not a geared motor...
I was also looking at the Split 280 at Hobby-Lobby.

Any thoughts on either of these, or on something else?

LOL! I'm in the same position, I have one of these with no plane to put it in!! I tried it in my Pop Fly, but it's too heavy for something like that. I was really annoyed when I discovered that the advertised weight of 1.3 ounces in just the motor, and the ESC alone weighs another 1.0 ounce. That's a lot of weight to plunk in a parkflyer, especially when the thrust isn't that great on anything less than 8 or 9 cells. I'm not sure what to put mine in either. It looks like a pylon racer type plane is the best choice, something like the Split 280 you mentioned.

Do a search on 010 (in the title) and you will find many threads discussing planes that successfully use the motor. For direct drive sport flying, the "pylon" type flyers work well as has been mentioned by Tres. The first plane I used it on was a "And-Now" type s*cked. I never tried another parkflyer with this motor again.
For a more relaxed flyer, a powered HLG (1.5 meter or so) glider is an option worth considering. BTW, the below geared glider uses a 16T motor, 8x700Mah packs (the same packs my Hawk-010 powered plane uses).

You can use the GWS EPS-300C AS gearbox with a little modification to accomodate Astro 010 and Robinson Racing 64P 16T pinion as shown in the attached picture. I may offer this as a bundle pack to get people up and runing out of the box. Pinion gears are on order.

This setup works very well with Lil Hornet and Mountain Model Switch Back using APC 10x7 SF prop and 10-cell AAA 720 mAH Ni-MH packs.

GoEFlight beat me to it. Switchback! I'm not sure how much difference the 16 turn will make compared to the 14 turn that's usually used for geardrive.

My SB flies great with the 010. I'm using the Astro gearbox and esc. A Castle Creations Phoenix ESC could be used to save over 1/2 ounce of weight. And the GWS gearbox is a 1/2 ounce less than the Astro gearbox.

My Omega 1.5 HLG also uses a gutted GWS gear sets. I use an "A" gear set and the original GWS pinion that I drilled out (it is brass) and press-fitted on. Here is an early-version from about 14 months ago that I used on an "and-now".

I have since shedded the GWS casing in favor of a tube mounted directly to the top of the motor. I made an aluminum motor-tube the diameter of the 010 (I then slid the 010 inside it), and epoxied a 1/4" carbon tube (self-lubricating, and cheap) to the motor-tube. The carbon tube had an inside diameter that was exactly right to fit the GWS prop-shaft.

Hello pullin-gs:

Can you provide a picture of your new setup with the Astro 010? Thanks.

I'd have to second the HOB Cub, I love it, I fly mine on 7 x 600 nimh cells, plenty of power to loop and roll (rudder only roll) from level flight. I average 15 minute flights.

Incidently I'm working on a new design right now for the 010 or DD speed 300. Still in electronic format, soon to be a real model. Its a little low winger sport plane with wheel pants. More to come......

Astro 010 Plane

I have one in a Wattage Hawk (aileron version) that really is a lot of fun. I run it on AAA Maxell 700's with great results. 6 cells mellow, 7 cells mild, and 8 cells wild!

I have been flying an Astro 010 powered CSD Twister for almost a year now with hundreds of flights on it. It is a great small, fast, sport plane and the Astro power system is well matched to the plane. Here are the specs:

My current power setup is the following:
Astro Flight 16 turn 010 brushless motor
Castle Creations Phoenix-10 ESC
10-600AE Sanyo NiCds
APC 4.75x4.75 prop

Data from The Electric Motor Calculator (P-Calc)
Current = 7.018 amps
Watts Out = 60.85 watts
Eff = 73.9 %
Pitch Speed = 80.3 mph
Full Throttle Duration = 5:08 minutes

In real world testing I get over 7 minutes of flight time at full throttle so the average current must be around 5 amps.
