GP Lancair EP Motor Not Straight??


Hi. I'm a heli guy that just bought a GP Lancair EP for a change of pace. I used to fly small planes, but havent built any yet. I noticed that the motor seems to be mounted crooked, so that if I look at the fuselage from the top, the prop shaft seems to be aiming to the right by about 10-15 degrees. Is that normal for a plane?? Is that done to compensate for the gyroscopic effect? Or did I just get a defective plane?

it should have some right thrust in it to compensate for torque. i cant be sure for this plane (i dont have one) but that sounds about right

2-3 degrees is pretty normal....if it really is 10-15 degrees then you have a serious problem.

Just some info back for you all. I sent a note to Great Planes asking about the off center motor. They said that it's normal, and on the Lancair ES, the motor should be 3-5 degrees right and 1-3 degrees down. I could be wrong about the 10-15 degrees; maybe it IS only 5 degrees right or so. I'm going to try to measure this with some grid paper, a protractor, and ruler. Just thought you all would like to know...

Buddy - all Rc tractor (pull) aircraft have to incorporate side and down thrust to counteract tourque. It is a prominent feature of every RC aircraft (prop driven atleast) I have ever seen or flown.

i guess you have seen a the new parkzone cessnas and stuff yet they have about 30* of down in them

haha, I was actually amaized during my initial training on the cessna caravan, the down and side thrust is so prominent it seems the spinner wants to dig a hole down and to the right
