Some EDFs at Best In The West
A few shots of the EDFs in attendance today.
I had a great time today hanging out with the eZoners; Ed, Ted, Gene, Greg and others. In spite of the high winds there were many EDF flights today. Great show! |

I don’t know if Uncle Lou gets on the net, but I will direct him to it if I can. The cowardly Pilot ejected (he, he, he, it was G. W. Bush. Flak suit on for that one) my guess is it got tail heavy after that and of course the fact that the canopy did not fully depart, well we all know the rest. It was a Blue Box Toys pilot and those are pretty heavy to start with, add to that it mounts way forward in the nose. Man this is the second one he looses. Lou Vadino use the fly chase to film the real one hence his love for the Wobbling Goblin

Just for fun...
Here's Dave a millisecond after the F-117 crashed today (the dust is still rising).
What is he thinking at this exact second? My guess: Damn, there goes my "Best Crash" trophy! |

Ooh and i think that Ed and Ted were totaly Sandbagged out of winning in either the EDF or Ducted fan categories... Goes to show if you last name is Wolf and are affiliated with Jet Hanger Hobbies then you automaticaly win... thou the Skyray wasn't half as sweet as Ted's F-16

You can see in your video (as in my stills) the left gear door open a bit. That pass down the runway was pretty fast and then he pulled up and left increasing the AOA ... that would force a lot of air into that gear bay ... maybe enough to increase the internal air pressure in the fuselage enough to pop the canopy and eject George. What a shame if the plane was destroyed because a gear door didn't shut all the way. |

I've seen folks use a weenie rubber band to hold down the canopy. But at the speeds turbine jets attain, they just might generate enough neg pressure above the canopy to lift it off their seats. I installed 2 x 3/16" dia magnets to hold the aft end of the canopy on my F-4. These have a lot more holding power, enough to chip the edge of the glass if proper tool not used in prying open the canopy.
Thanks for posting the shots from BITW! Keep them coming & have a good time. Phil |

Well I didn't see Chri's flights on Friday but I've seen him fly and he's super smooth so I'm sure he impressed the judges and deserves the award...Congrats Chris! I don't have any room for plaques anyway, this place is packed with balsa and ply and servos and videos! I was a bit nervous at that site, this being my first time there and the wind was blowing us all over...I saw my F-18 drop a foot in front of me on a low pass inside a gust. It calmed down a bit mid day but then picked up again. I need more practice before trying any low inverted passes, and we see with the Eurofighter what can happen!

I suppose it is an optical illusion but that thing looked, until the berm came into view, like it was coming into the crowd - very scary. At least it looked like it was going slowly. It probably was much further away than it seemed but boy - yikes. That is the first time I have seen an F-117 fly and I was surprised at how stable it was until the bits fell off.
To fly an airplane with the CG suddenly moved aft you gotta hold the stick a bunch forward to find the trim point, then move it microns in each direction for maneuvering - like milking a mouse, since your elevator power has probably doubled or tripled due to reduced pitch stability. That pilot did a great job actually, considering the pressure, the type of airplane and the failure he was dealing with. Was the damage all that bad? Hats off to him. That F-16 in the earlier pic, sitting on the little stand, is absolutely gorgeous - what a finish - any info on that??? AAARRLLLLLL (or however you spell a Homer Simpson drool)... |
