Depron CAP 10b Design 05-09-06 FIRST FLIGHT! -w- pics!

I like this depron stuff.

So much so that I think I want to build something different.

The hiperbipe proved to me that there is a way of getting a very scale aircraft out of a sheet of "weighs nothing" foam.

So, I'm going to do one of my all time favourite aerobats.

The Mudry Cap 10b - ala The French Connection aerobatics team

Like so..

Once again, designed in Rhino 3d to be as mouldable as possible. Here's where it stands at the moment.

and here is the unrolled cap, ready to be printed out and stuck onto some depron...

Now all I'm waiting on is the depron

Good things come to those who wait!

It has begun.

After waiting forever and a day, I finally picked up some depron on thursday.

After my initial misgivings about some parts of my design, I decided to bit the bullet and use 6m for all the tail surfaces, ailerons, formers and a few other odds and sods.

So the shopping list was 2 x 3mm sheets and 1 x 6mm sheet.

I then printed out all of the parts @ 1:1 scale on my work plotter (incidentally a B1 sheet is the same size as the depron sheets I can buy 1000 x 707.

A quick spray with spray bond, and then whack it down, voila all my templates ready go, just get an exacto and start cutting. You'll also notice some of the stupidy I went to take weight out but leave in rigidity on the formers. Also on the foam templates I left my olding lines to helpe construct the beastie.

Hi, im tackling similar idea of a full fuse depron 3D model for 550 grams AUW, 2200 3S LiPo. What sort of weights are you expecting?

Under 300 grams if I can snaffle it but I'm only using a 1500mAh pack, we'll see.

tape is your friend.

Well, moving right along.

With all of the peices cut out I set about making the right shapes for the fuselage. Getting the rear turtledeck to work is pretty simple as the original had stringer spines clearly visible, so it's a simple task of score with a pen and fold. I then held the shape together roughly with tape, and filled the turtle deck with hot water. Boom, instant hold with no internal stresses.

I then fitted most of the formers and did the front , but the old rolling pin trick to start with and then more hot water.

Voila, one made fuselage, I then put the rear turtledeck spine in, glued the tail together, (cutting the slots for the tailplane AFTER it's cut, so that everything fitsn nicely) and started to work my way up the fuse, gluing in some more formers, checking that it's all straight, at all times.

Wing span is 1050 and the powerplant is my trusty Himax 2025/4200 on a 5:1 gearing.

I'm hoping a 10 x 6 will make it perform like a pattern ship.
