What do you think of this setup?

Motor: Mega ACn 16-25-3; 1700rpm/V; 1.9A no-load; 0.017 Ohms.
Battery: Sanyo CP-1700SCR; 12 cells; 1700mAh @ 1.2V; 0.0055 Ohms/cell.
Speed Control: Generic Brushless ESC; 0.006 Ohms; High rate.
Drive System: SKYCAT; 12x8 (Pconst=1.08; Tconst=1) geared 2.3:1 (Eff=95%).
Airframe: SKYCAT; 558sq.in; 53.3oz; 13.7oz/sq.ft; Cd=0.043; Cl=0.06; Clopt=0.39; Clmax=0.89.
Filter: 80% min efficiency.
Stats: 121 W/lb in; 102 W/lb out; 22mph stall; 33mph opt @ 60% (16:31, 109F); 88mph level; 1989ft/min @ 42.9; -510ft/min @ -10.

Now as you can see this was for my skycat....it was a pig...and this setup made it fly very nice...just almost hover.

This time I will use lipos..any thoughts?

Motor is about the right weight. (110g) You still have to add a gearbox on that, but should be in the ball park.

According to motocalc that rig is pulling 400w or so (121w/lb*3.3). That is also right in the ball park. But you have 14v using 12 cells. Closer to 4s than 3s.

Effective KV geared 2.3:1 is 739. The 800KV motors do very nicely in this plane on 3s and a 12x6 or 13x6.5 ... The slightly lower kv and a 12x8 should be fine and put you squarely in the 350-400w range.

Passes the quick and dirty sanity check for me. Don't know how much of a pain it will be to mount. But it should balance and work fine. Wouldn't be my choice but if it's there... why not? Should be much nicer on a 33oz plane than 50oz.

Would the E-flite 480 work for this plane?

If your talking about the 480 bl outrunner, I think it will be to small. that motor is for 3D planes from 550 to 850 grams and the acro master comes in around 1100 grams. The Himax 3516/1130 is what is recommended

The Power 10 is almost identical to the recommended system. The 480 is a little small, but it will certainly get it up in the air. Lots of 30oz planes i.e Brio flying on it.

How well will a Mega RC600/20/8 work on the AM? It's an 885 rpm/v outrunner that weighs 4.7oz 136g. It runs about 350 watts.

How would this compare to the best motors out there, the Torque and maybe Hyperion and HiMaxx?

*I ran the motocalc number last night when I got home..if I did it right this setup (which is already sitting waiting for a plane) with an 11x5.5 prop on 3s or 4s will out perform the recommended Himax motor (higher output watts/lb).

The only problem I have is (as you mentioned) I dont know how easy it will be to mount up the superbox (http://www.modelelectronicscorp.com/.../superbox.html) to the motor mount.

Love the 'star bursts' on the canopy. What kind of paint did you use and how well does/is it sticking?

The paint i am using is AutoAir colours from createx, they are superb!, i gave the model a rub down with fine wet and dry, to get a good key, and the paint went on well, must be carefull when masking over painted surface as anything other than ultra lowtac tape will fetch off the colour.

Cheers

simon 3D,
That work is superb. Only You and Blucor seem to know what's up with this foam. Mine is all white with black canopy. Easy to see, but not a justified look for our birds of paradise. Maybe I can get my neighbor to spray her up....

I have used epoxy for repairs and mods on my Magister with no problems. The trick is to properly prepare the surfaces - sand them with 300 grit to get a nice 'suede' finish and the epoxy adheres perfectly well. If something breaks there again, the epoxy will bring only a layer of elepor beads with it.

I have now decided to do more than reinforce, I am going to glass the nose with two plies of very lightweight fiberglass and use finishing resin. A test on an old piece of a 'boneyard' Magister gives excellent results. The finishing resin is a polyimide that will remain slightly flexible but with very high shear strength, complimenting the glass which adds high tensile strength. Very thin CF cloth would also work but I do not have any and it is a bit more tricky to work. The glass is nearly transparent and hides mistake much more easily - if you goof with CF, everyone can see your incomptence.

Once I have the nose glassed, I will begin applying the metallic iron-on covering. I have red, green, blue, purple and white to play with. Since I have zero artistic abilities, I probably won't post any pics (unless by some miracle it looks really nice).
