New Balsa pusher Jet. "Seether"
Well, seems like I originally posted this all in the wrong forum (Parkflyers) so I'm reposting here now -
---- Well rather than my usual process of boring people for weeks on end on a plane that may never go anywhere, I decided to wait until the very last moment before I started posting about my latest "design" (let's be realistic, there's plenty of planes that look like this one too). Anyhow, without further adue, here's some images of my latest creation... It'll be going for its re-maiden flight tommorow (first flight was prematurely terminated when the RX failed on me - I accidently installed my known-broken RX into my new plane *sigh* ) .... it started out simple enough .... ... then it started to grow some fins! ... ... *pop* out comes a nose, well, this isn't exactly a normal "wing", it's turning more into a jet-cat sort of plane. ... I'm not really one for having my electronics exposed to the outside world, so I like to put things into a boxe fuselage, this one was easy enough. ... Here we are, all done, ready to rock-and-roll... almost. A shot of the 'guts' of the plane. This is running a GWS 2205 motor with a GWS 15A ESC, throwing a 7060 prop (trading thrust for pitchspeed here, should get 80km/hr). The receiver is the GWS 8MSL+ single-conversion receiver. I've also used a GWS vtail mixer to mix flaps + ailerons. The elevator is driven by a 5.8g pico servo. The flaperons are driven by GWS 9g naro servos. The battery is a 2S2200 12C FullRiver battery (very good pack, I have one here that sustained a 80A discharge in an accident and it didn't get too upset - unlike the T-connector). Okay, vinyl colours are on - we're ready to GO GO GO |

Vax (nice computer system btw, not sure if that's what your nick is based on)
AUW (without battery) is 297g atm. With a 2S2200 12C pack it's 400g AUW. That's a bit heavier than what I wanted but I ended up using some 6mm balsa that was a bit dense than intended, no problems though, should help it a bit with the wind. Plans will be drawn up and finalised for the first public draft over the weekend. I'm seriously considering taking the h-stab away and using a canard configuration instead. Paul. |

Balsa Cat
Hey Paul, how's that saying go about great minds .... ??? (Though, in reality, I am definitely not one of the great minds ...)
I was trying to come up with something to do with the HUNDREDS of sheets of 1/4" x 4" x 24" Contest (4-6 lb) C-Grain I have stashed away. (No, I'm not selling the balsa!) |

Brian,
Ah well, damn, that kills my little hopes of kitting up the balsa wing/cat Good to see you doing stuff other than just pure -work-. I like the way you did the rounded fuse on your little 'pylon' type racer plane. Also, you know I've never heard about how your QFII flew ...and more so, along things like the G+ and DL50... you'll have to let me in on that. I see the G+ has gotten some upgrades too (AG36 foil, notched TE etc). I was going to be drawing up the plans for the "un-named" balsa-cat, but I was really also attempting to get a canard version too. This thing mostly uses 5mm (3/16"???) balsa all around, except for the h-stab which is using 3/32. Paul. |

Bad news.... Pilot jumped ship about 8 minutes into the flight.
Not sure _exactly_ what went wrong. Two things are in my mind 1. v-tail mixer spasmed and reset 2. flaperon control horn snapped off Can't think of much else. The plane was going -great-. Low passes, steep climbs, loops, rolls, it was doing it all and doing it very nicely. More than ample power coming from the GWS motor. Not sure if I'll repair this one or build a new one from scratch. Damage isn't too bad, it's primarily a wingtip crushed (cut it off and glue a new one on), shattered fuselage (only two sheets of 1/8" balsa) and the tail fins snapped off. |

It's ALIVE
Okay, I managed to cry over the coffee machine long enough that I finally pulled myself together and went down to the workshop and rebuilt the jigsaw puzzle.
The one major difference this time... I've removed the v-tail mixer. This means I don't get to use flaps in this case. Here she is sitting pretty waiting for the new day. Paul. |

Finally... I landed
Yes, I took it out today, complete with a bag of butterflies in my stomach and away I went for my 4th attempt.
This time, everything went well, though I think the weight of the repairs is sapping my performance a bit. Never the less, I flew for perhaps 10~12 minutes and drained 1750mA from my 2S2200mA pack. Stalls are mushy, I just cut power, pulled full up, it'd pitch up, stall, dive for a little then just behave like a flat-plate the rest of the way down without doing the stall move again. Without the flaps (I took the mixer out) the landings are a little hotter than I prefer but full up gives me a sufficiently slow landing that I don't break my props. All in all, I think the design is great, I just need to build a new one without all the repair weights. A more powerful motor would perhaps also improve matters (this is a GWS2205 + 15A ESC with a 7060 prop). ... now, time to modify it. |

vax - I've got a few other BL motors, however the 2205 will suffice for now, I just need to get rid of some weight and streamline it a bit more.... as I said, perhaps a rebuild would be the best option.
Still trying to pick up a name that'll best suit the plane, though I suspect I should make the mods first. Paul. |
