Seagull Edge 540 60 "New Model"

Just picked the NEW Seagull Edge 540 60 from my LHS.

http://www.horizonhobby.com/Shop/ByC...ProdID=SEA4000

The quality of the plane is really good. I can tell that they really tried to keep it lite. It really does look like some of the other "High Quality" ARF's I have seen on RCG. Seagull also states this in their description on the attached link. My intent was to find a plane that would fly better than the Phoenix Models Sukhoi 31 .46 I converted and still use the same setup. It was just too heavy an airframe @ 7lbs 1oz RTF. I also wanted something with more 3D capabilities (not that I'm any good at it). The control surfaces seem to be large enough for at least some good 3D, but I will be limited by the power system.
I'll try to get some pics up tonight.

Here is what my setup is going to be:

E-Flite Power 60
CC PH 60
APC 16x8E
4x TP 3S 2100 PL wired 6S2P 4200
UBEC 45V
JR R700
5x JR DS811 Digital servos

Might switch to a CC HV-85 so I can run 17" props for more power.

Here are the part weights: oz
Wheels & Hardware in bag 7.65
Cowl 5.65
Alum LG 3.7
Wheel Pants (both) 1.45
Fuse 29.45
Horizontal/elev 3.8
Vertical/rudd 2.1
Right Wing 12.85
Left wing 12.55
Alum spar tube 5.05

Total 84.25

Approx elec 48

Approx RTF 132.25

Great thread! I have one of these on the bench, waiting for the customer to choose the exact Hyperion outrunner he wants. One word of caution- This landing gear appears to be the same as the other Seagull landing gear: useless as a wet noodle. I recommend replacing it before the first flight. Otherwise, they are great airplanes, and a bargain.

Good luck!

blucor,
Which landing gear are you using then?

I have a box of old gear. I found some black fiberglass ones for my Harrier in there, and I found some white fiberglass ones in there that might work for the Edge. If not, I think the Showtime stock gear will do the trick. We'll see.

I checked the Showtime gear, it's just about perfect for this plane. It's white, it's got the right size mounting area, and it adds 1" of clearance for the prop.

Hey I'm building an Edge with a 75" wing. I could use a good cowl if it would fit. Would you mind measuring the firewall/cowl?
My firewall dimensions are 7-15/16" high by 7-3/8" wide.
Firewall to front of cowl is 9-11/16" The cowl could be longer if it overlapped the front of the plane.

FM, these are the cowl dims I posted in the Edge 1.5 thread.

blucor,
What material are the showtime gear made out of? More ground clearance sounds good, although I have not checked it on mine.

Progress

Well, the customer has chosen his components, Hyperion 4025 outrunner, 6S 3650 Tanic, PHX80, Hitec digitals. We're definitely using Showtime LG, and larger H9 wheel pants to hide bigger wheels, as well. He also has ordered a custom covering/paint job. Here's a sneak peek at the paint:

blucor,
Keep us up to date with that 4025 setup. Which wind are you using? I would like to know how it performs. I was thinking a 4035 would be a good 3D motor on maybe 8S or high currnet 6S if my EFlite Power 60 doesn't cut it.

The motor is 4025-12, which is 486 KV and makes 1300W or so reliably. We've been using this motor in a Funtana40 for another customer and it's pretty crazy. The Saegull we're setting up not for hardcore 3D, but for mostly sport flying, so 1300 should be just fine. If someone wanted an ultimate 3D machine form this ARF, probably I'd go with a 4035-12 on 8S. This customer, however, already owns several 3S 3650 Tanic packs, so we're doing this 6S setup.

I haven't tested the 4035-10 on 6S, but it looks like it might need too big a prop to get the watts on that setup. We're already running 16 and 17" props on these to get the watts on the 4025's with a 3D pitch. This plane, however, will probably run a 15X12 for sport flying.

Also which Hitec's are you using?

Update on my build:
Today, I should be picking up the last JR DS811 I need for the rudder. Plane is almost RTF. Right now it is at 132oz RTF. I am just finishing up the battery mounting and working on the CG. I am trying to find ways to get weight out of the tail as I need about 3.5 oz in the spinner to get the recommended CG (100 mm at the wing root). While surfing the net yesterday, I did happen to find a kit from World Models that uses a 'dummy' shaft and horns to replace the two tail mounted elev servos. Then you can install a single elev servo pull-pull to the middle of the shaft. This would eliminate a servo and move the elev servo close to the CG.
