Question
Searching Simple Controller for Free Flight
I have found commercially available controllers for brushless outrunners only for RC use, meaning they have proportional speed control through the receiver.
For free flight a simple full power / stop controller would be sufficient (well, maybe sort of half power for trimming ?), actuated by an on / off switch or similar. Does anybody know of such a controller or of a way to build one? Thanks for your help! |

Ask the guys in the control line forum, they're using a timer of some sort coupled to the ESC, probably close to what you're looking for.

Thanks, big help!
Both answers have given valuable info.
The devices available are close in specs, and may possibly be adjusted to fit perfectly. Biggest problem seems to be how to get these devices across the big pond to me ... and the money the other way! Good helpful forum, lots of helpful people! Thanks again Flymax |

Hi Flymax,
Why not take the easy path and use Smoothie timer #7 .... it's all set up for free flight.... no modifications needed? Also, it's made in the USA. See it here: http://www.eft-inc.com/models/ The control line timer you are looking at would need a lot of programming changes. Free flight models don't have 8 minute motor runs. rivers |

The JMP timer is adjustable from 10 seconds to 1000 seconds..... |

F1Q rules reduce the motor run to as low as 5 seconds in flyoffs. It's helpful to have 0.1 second resolution for timing this short.
See the F1Q Rules attachment |
