Just found this out the other day. Su = vinegar, Shi = rice. If you want to name your plane after raw fish it would be Sashimi.
Anyhow it looks like a cool project.

Well that's a bummer! Vinegar and Rice sounds so much less poetic than Raw Fish. We'll see how the name evolves as the plane does. I just felt bad not naming it something. It's kind of like a code name until I peel back enough layers of rolled seaweed and imitation crab to discover what it's true essence is.

Sushi and Sashimi = Good
Colorado Sushi and Sashimi = Bad (and/or expensive)

That's the ONE THING that might make me go back to Hawaii.

By the way, the plane looks nice. For raw fish.

I do have a question though, and if the answer has been discussed at length somewhere else, let me know where. I think the whole Swing Wing thing is very cool! But are there any real advantages to it? Or rather, what characteristics are you trying to take advantage of by building a plane with pitcheron or wingeron?

One cool advantage is you can "plug in" new airfoils to prototype more easily...

Ha! California Roll, that's a fun one!

Aside from what Infopimp mentioned, I think the big advantage of the twisty wing species is that there are no linkages or control surfaces on the wings. That way the wing always presents the "true" airfoil to the wind. I would say that the potential for a less draggy airframe and the fun factor is what makes it for me.

So tonight I managed to get the cores cut for the wing rod, and it's reinforcement. Everything is ready to be epoxied in! My girlfriend had one of her friends sleeping over tonight so I had to cut the build short since my model airplane room doubles as the guest room on occasion. "You aren't allergic to dust are you?" Oh my rodent stab to throw a coat of primer on anyway.

You are correct sir!

That said, "Sushi" carries with it the connotation (though somewhat incorrect) of raw fish...besides, I like the name. My vote...stick with "Sushi"!!!

Hey guys, I have a question... Do you think I have anything to loose or gain from sheeting the tip panel separately from the inboard panel, and giving it a bit of "polyhedral" out there. The benefits I can think of are that it would be a bit easier to keep lined up while sheeting, and maybe an increase in straight-line stability. The downside I think would be that I would be increasing my risk of tip stalling. What do you think?

I don't think it would be worth it--it would add tip weight and it would add stress to the twist linkage. The profile drag of the tip would be above the pivot point, thus trying to pitch up the wing at high speeds.

Agreed. When you start twisting wings with polyhedral, it is possible that the tips could introduce some big yaw forces when you crank them in roll. Clean rolling is something that twisty wings do well. 6062 is a good choice for airfoil as it has low pitching and has a fairly even drag at +- a few degrees. Polyhedral might give you more challenges to sort out.

A clean pitcheron can perform in very light lift as long as you keep the speed up, and manage your energy well.
