EasyStar with CVS camcorder

We're not letting winter and a bit of snow stop us!
Another flier has added an EasyStar with the hacked CVS camera to his fleet, so of course we have been playing together...
Here's 3 more video's, all comments welcome!
On the last one, I took the EZ* up as high as I could see it in the failing light. The cloudy sky made it hard to see it at that altitude. Can anyone guess at how high I was? I'm going to have to get some kind of altitude logger soon.

Is it hard to hack a CVS camera? And what kind of fps do they run? 15 or 30?

Loved the video's especially the one with the dog chasing your friend. I saw some of your vids on the camera hacking forum and asked you about your setup. I'm curious where your flight pack battery is located in order to get the correct CG. I bought and Easy Star after seeing your vids, since I already have two of the CVS Hacked cameras. I have been flying them in my Slow Stick but wasn't happy with the side view. I took the case off of one and it weights about half what yours does. I want to mount it so that the lense pokes through the canopy for reduced drag. Keep posting your videos they are great!

I have two on www.video.google.com look up AP1 or Slow Stick video to see them!

Camerahacking.com has all the information you could ever want about the CVS camera. It's capable of recording up to 640x480@30 FPS.
Gary, I figured since this plane was conceived to run a heavy nicd in the nose, if I used a relatively light Lipo, the camera would make up the difference. I built my easystar stock, but added a much bigger balsa rudder, and added the carbon tube in the aft fuselage. I use HS-81 servos, and a full-sized futaba receiver.
With the AA's in the camera, it balanced perfectly with a 3S1320 TP. I was losing too many videos because the AA's died in flight, so I removed them and wired the camera to run on RX power. I tried a 2100 3S2100 TP lipo, but it required a bit of ballast in the tail to balance. Now I'm running a 3S2000 TP lipo, and have removed all the ballast.
Without really trying to maximize endurance, I can fly for about 30 minutes.

It's an easy camera to hack thanks to many of the folks at the above web page.
You can select any resolution and 24 or 30 fps.
Adjusting the record time is a option as well.
Just download the auto installer for OPS and pick up a 3.40 camera off of ebay and away you go. You can use the 3.60 or 3.70 versions but it requires some tinkering.
All explained in detail at the camerhacks web site.

I thought long and hard about a suitable plane for my AP application.
Since I'm just dabbling now, and other aspects of R/C suck up most of my money, it had to be cheap.
Second, I have seen how bad most video looks when viewed thru a prop, so it had to be either a pusher, or a twin.
Third, it had to be stable and easy to fly. I want to concentrate on getting good videos, not flying.
Finally, it had to be big enough to be capable of carrying the equipment.

Lipo's make the easystar the answer. Since it was designed to carry a NiCD or NiMh pack, you can save weight with lipos and have plenty of payload capacity for the camera.
