Very Nice, I loved the clip with it taking off from the gym floor. I think that’s the first time I’ve ever seen an ornithopter ROG (rise off ground). I like the way you designed your flapping mechanism too; four wings with only two connection rods, nice.

New tail mechanism

Here are some pics of the new tail system, really light and stiff.

Now I am awaiting a delivery of gears from Graham Stabler so I can start on the new light mechanism.

First picture shows the Kevlar / Balsa sandwich flex - hinge contruction this is very smooth in operation and provides just enough torque resistance for the actuator to work against.

Given the way the battery is knocked off the BaHoMa connector on landing, that should work nicely ;-)

The last one flew beautifully, I can't wait to see this one!

hmmmm.. I am beginning to really like ornithopters now, especially micro size. I may just go ahead and put together a FF Ornithopter so I see how the mechanics work and then maybe work my way upto installing a micro9 rx with suitable electrics and see what happens. I see one needs a good understanding of ornithopter mechanics to get them to fly correctly but I am sure I will find all I need here. Thanks Jantel

Bahoma gone and replaced with JMT connectors, thats how it held together last week, I tried it on Saturday with a 60Ma Kokam and the climb rate is significantly better

Nice work Terry! I have been meaning to have a proper look. It seems a very practical rendition and I particularly like the spar strengthening.

I think I might have to build myself one!

Could saran wrap be used instead of tissue to solve the mosture problem?

Saran wrap may work for the tale but it doesn’t work well at all for wing covering, it has too much flex. I’ve also heard some people have had the same experiences with thin Mylar. I’ve used ¼ mill Mylar for wing covering and did not have good results with it. Perhaps the heaver ½ mill Mylar would work better.

When the new model is finished I will cover it in Airspan, this should free me up from the problems induced by moisture.

I need to save weight so I will go back to the 60Ma Kokam, I know the best way forwards will be Plantraco but after investing in a new Helicopter that is postponed,

Graham - the tilt tail is very effective; however one has to over elevate in level flight as the action od twisting the tail effectivly reduces up in turns.

But after saying that I have found that Orni's don't stall as we know it they just slow and get onto the back of the lift drag curve if you over do it

I think im gonna try building one of these for use with my RFFS-100 unit and a 90mAh lipoly. Does anyone know if the 30:1 reduction is required or can it be a a little off. I cannot locate the gears specified in the plan.

New plane converted to Orni for 30$ total

How about an Ornithopter with the SW parts?? I've always admired those Ornithopter's flapping wings. Jantel has done one that fits the bill with a 13" wingspan. plans on post 2.

Specs on his Flapping wing:
13" Wingspan
9.5g flying weight
Jmp Combo RX 3ch. Only using 2 Ch *heavy about 1.86 -2.4g
60kokam *old
90etec *old
Motor 4.5R Didel, (6mm?? 4.5ohm ??)
Gears: The new updated plans say 9t pinion, 36t second, and 68t third step.
He also wrote in the thread they were 60 tooth and 48 tooth 9 tooth, but I think THE PLANS ARE RIGHT, and his post is wrong.

The Silverlit SW fits the bill with 9t pinion, 34t spur, all is needed is a didel 60t +++ I was going to buy one from Epilot but he only had the 60t .2 mod, was sold out of the 60t .3 mod and had no 1mm brass brushings in stock. Can someone ID the gear mod size in the SW please. I did get some 50mah cells, so as soon as he gets stock in and I'm sure of the Gear mod i'll make another order.

I know an Orni is a hard build and people say start with rubber band plans so I posted those below if anyone else wants to try. 20$ plane , 5$ lipo, 5$ didel 60t gear, thats about 30$ for an R/C Ornithopter sounds good!

ps. I can't find the thread for calculating gear ratio. The SW orni will be 10 teeth short from the plans (30:1) So what is the Gear Ratio of a 9t , 34t , 60t gear box.?? and What Final Didel gear will get 30:1 thanks!

Repairing my Orni's

Good to see a renewed interest in the micro sized Orni's, now its the end of October the indoor season in the UK is well and truly here and I needed to get some air time with the Ornithopters.

Biggest and only change so far is the fitting to both RC and free flight models the new Full River 50Ma cell from indoor flyer, the FF model has gained a transparent vertical fin to help where the model cannot alsways decide to turn the same way on subsiquent flights, performance is now excellent with the new cell reducing all up weight by 20%.

RC model with the same cell flies really well with a much improved climb rate, I have just finished re-fitting a front protection hoop od stripped down CF to give some wall impact resistance and give me a further forwrd place to mount the smalled cell.
