I have skipped several steps here that will show up in my conversion write-up but it installed very easy with foam-safe CA and 4 or 5 tape strips for hinges.

The aileron seemed sufficiently sturdy with the stock taped trailing edge but the wing was still rather flimsy. I re-cyled my carbon flat bars from the old wing set and epoxied them onto the wing underside.

Sine the Sky Runner will fly incredibly slow on less than half throttle of the KP-00 motor, I was not concerned with adding a little extra weight.

The connecting rod is a small piece of stripped solid wire from the RFFS100 module kit.

The finished wing half was duplicated for the other half and is then ready to assemble onto the fuselage and plug into the RFFS100 module.

Since there are two sets of pins, one set for each aileron, I tested the aileron movement for opposide direction before soldering on set of pins to the top of the other set.

My Sky Runner finally flew well using dual ailerons and offsetting the droop with magnets.

Since the fly-in last Saturday, I have increased the dihedral a bit to improve the steering even more and replaced the 0.1oz Penny nose weight with a second 230mAh LiPoly cell to double the duration.

After all the pummeling that this model took, the stock high-impact rubber nose and stock plastic skid kept the plane undamaged. Having a pusher prop configuration keeps the KP-00 motor very safe in the back.

The only component that was jarred loose was the crystal so I held it in place with a tiny piece of servo tape in between the crystal bottom side and the top of the IC chip that it rests on.

First aileron plane choice?


Greg,

Would this be a good choice for someone contemplating their first aileron plane?

It did look like a great flyer. I would think it could handle a bit of breeze in the backyard, as well.

Hi John,

My goal is to make it a good first plane period. It really only has ailerons because it seemed an easier design approach than adding tailweight with a new rudder assembly. It flew fine outside before I tried it indoors and needed better turning response.

It has many things that I am looking for that will help bring more people into micro flight. My goal here is a simple to convert, simple to fly, and durable indoor flyer.
  • safe pusher configuration
  • rubber nose for crashing
  • charging station
  • On/Off switch
  • cheap $10-$13 ARF
  • big wingspan for 2oz
  • durable foam construction

I have updated my conversion article here.

All that remains is to post some flying shots when they return from the developer.

Let's see how much better it flies at the next meet. With double the duration without adding any weight, and, additional dihedral, we can pass the stick around.
