I learned on a Hobbico 40 trainer back in the day. I keep a Hobbico 60 trainer around these days with a OS GT15 for easy economical fun. If you want to build a kit I highly recommend the sig senior kadet. It flies very slow due to it's very light wing loading....just don't try on windy days if your just learning. I bring mine to the field almost every trip.

I'm attempting to learn with a Hobbico Avistar. Bought it and another big plane for $20. Flew by myself twice and failed so I went to fly once with an instructor, he helped so much. I havnt flown since, about 2 weeks, I am going to send it and try it on my own soon. Instructor helped a lot for me.

It would be a good idea to stick with the instructor until you solo. You'll learn a lot more about how to read your plane in the air. You'll also learn about how to set your plane up properly. I taught myself to fly. Very expensive and destructive.

LT-40 gas

Been trying different trainers on gas for a few years. This is the the perfect gas trainer setup. Stinger 10cc side exhaust with 6oz tank. Thats 30 minutes to dead stick. Battery is 5 cell nimh 3000ma. After 3 ten minute flights and one 30 minute flight, I had 6.1v left according to telemetry. Thats roughly just shy of half throttle cruising speed for a student. The stinger 10cc has been great out of the box. Flying performance has been great. The plane flys light instead like a heavily loaded plane. All it took to balance was moving the elevator servo to the tail. Real happy with this plane.

Thats a good setup! putting an old PT-40 kit together for my son and would of loved to do a gasser, but its on the small side, the LT-40 is a better candidate for that.

That said i did put a RCGF 21cc Twin boxer gasser on a PT-40 trainer before haha, it was fun!

That would be awesome in a LT-40.

A man with too many toys
Any company still making a large 40 size or small 60 size trainer ARF's. Something that would be good with my old K&B .61.

It seams strange that all the 40/60 size ARF trainers disappeared over the last few years. Is anyone still making them? I did have a SIG Kadet LT-14 ARF but it folded the wings during aerobatics so I don't want another one of those. It was a good flying airplane until the wings folded at the bottom of a loop

Most of the ones I see are at swapmeets. A kit built LT-40 would be the best option.

SIG sells something called the Funmaster 72. Has anyone seen one of these?

The LT-40 ARF wing only has 1 longitudinal spar. The kit version of the LT-40 has 2 longitudinal wing spars. I have both an LT-40 ARF and a kit built LT-40. The kit built version is much more robust.
