Heaven's Gate OPEN!!

Spoke to Joe Manor yesterday-- he says the upper gate to Heaven at Saddleback Mountain is OPEN!!! SO the next good westerlies-- I'm headed up there with some scale stuff and my F3F planes to play!!! Probably over Thanksgiving weekend. I think it's a possible F3F race site--- and definitely a good big scale bird site-- right in our backyard!! Will keep ya posted!

I went up to the lower site on Skyline Dr. and flew with Joe on Wednesday (Thanx, Joe). Since then, I've been examining that mountain from every angle using Google Earth and TOPO! and may have found a site up there that should have epic lift in Santana Wind conditions.

It's a boxed canyon which goes all the way from ground level in Corona to the very top of Pleasants Peak. The top forms a bowl which is 1.3 miles across from ridge to ridge and there's a road which follows nearly the entire top ridge. The elevation rise from ground level at the base to the top ridge is 2400 feet and along the top ridgeline there are numerous places which drop off steeply on the other side. By all rights, this should be a killer slope with DS potential.

In deference to those with slow internet connections, I've converted the images to links.
Click the links below and the image should open in a new window:

Google Earth view looking SW up the canyon

Google Earth view looking NE down the canyon

To get there you go all the way to the top of Skyline Drive and bear LEFT at Oak Flat on the Main Divide Truck Trail. It appears to be a 3.5-4 mile drive south from there along the Truck Trail. The center of the bowl is very near the Pleasant Peak Communications Facility which is at the very top of the peak. The GPS waypoints are (NAD83, WGS84 datum):

Start point: 33.84171, -117.59836, 1132' elev. Aprox. location of gate
Intersection: 33.83702, -117.59825, 1132' elev. TURN RIGHT HERE
Lower flying site: 33.83926, -117.61716, 1967' elev.
Oak Flat Intersection: 33.82905, -117.63784, 2697' TURN LEFT HERE
Intersection: 33.82164, -117.63933, 2802' elev. TURN LEFT HERE
Upper flying site: 33.81368, -117.62725, 3765' elev.

Copy and paste any of these coordinates into Google Earth to check things out for yourself.

I need to qualify this: I haven't actually been to this location but I have flown the lower flying site with Joe and the lift was great. I'm heading for the upper site today to check it out.

It's only about a mile up the road from the gate. The RIGHT slope in the photo faces NNE and produces excellent lift for light to medium weight planes in Santana wind conditions. The lift band goes out several hundred feet.

This one I've flown!

All this typing has given me a bad case of M'outta syndrome and the only cure I know is some flying.

M'outta here.

Can you guess where I'm going?

Curses, Foiled Again

Well today certainly didn't go as planned.

I met a USFS Ranger at the lower gate and had a lengthy talk with him. He said there's a gate up top just past the Doppler Dome which prevents us from driving all the way to the potential site. He seems to think there's a chance the key could be had from the District Ranger but who knows.

I only went up to the lower site today and spent 3 hours there without even switching on my TX. The air was basically dead still with only brief puffs of wind.

Oh well, it beat sitting home.

I was going to PM you, Pete; but since you posted what I wanted to know(about the conditions today) I don't need to. Sorry it wasn't better for you (and for me tomorrow).

Sure doesn't look real good today either. the Chino and Riverside MESONET stations are showing Calm and no wind direction right now and the Corona station isn't even reporting.

When I got home last night I looked at the wind history for the time I was up there and there should have been enough lift to at least fly the lightweights. But that wind got lost somewhere down on the valley floor.

Sometimes the wind blows, sometimes it sucks. Fickle thing, the wind.

Stay in it!!!!
Pete, that spot youre looking at does not have any accessible spots to launch/ land. Its also slightly off camber to collect the wind. The next valley to the east is the one Ive flown before on a light day and it was good. i have about six santa ana spots Ive been eyeing for years up there. If you can generate more images I can pinpoint these spots for you. I know those hills like the back of my hand. My second home for most of my life.

I know the answer to that from personal experience, but 'splaining it in appropriate language (not to be confused with acceptable language) would probably earn me my first warning.
