Question

What RX are you using in yout HLG's ?


What RX are you using in your HLG's ?
I had a GWS, but it started glitching so badly and doesn't stop,its not the antenna. I am looking to get an idea what everyone likes.

Hitec 555 with the case removed. I covered the bare Rx with a piece of battery pack shrink wrap.

Hitec W/O case like Doc or the FMA extreme 5. Both are equally light and compact with more range than you can see.
Just recently seen an ad somewhere for a new lighter FMA 5 channel dual conversion.

Which of the GWS receivers are you using?
I've got a GWS 7g Naro receiver but haven't tried it yet.
What kind of problems are you having?

I have used the JETI Rex 4 in electric models with no problems.
This RX is quite compact and has a shorter than normal antenna which is convenient.

What is the size/weight of a hitec 555 as supplied?

FMA Extreme-5. Excellent receiver. I usually launch with my TX antenna only extended about 18" or so. If I catch something big, then I pull it all the way out. Quite a few times I've specked out and was flying near the limit of my vision and realized I never extended the TX antenna. Never noticed a problem under these conditions. My second Extreme-5 just arrived a couple days ago.

I'm having very weird problems with the GWS too.
It glitches like crazy when I turn it on, then stabilizes
to some extent. Sometimes it glitches again briefly.
The GWS spec indicates a voltage range of 4.8->6.0 V.
with a 4-cell NiCd pack the nominal voltage is exactly 4.8
which might be ok except that when the servos start
drwaing current, the voltage is going to drop on the
smaller capcacity batteries. I suggest 5-cells. I'll try this
and let u know. To reduce weight, switch to the next lower capcaity. On my bug, I plan to go from 4-cell 110maH to 5-cell 50mAh NICd or 100mAH NimH.

Another possibility is that if the pushrods don't have
sleeves and touch each other, that will cause glitching.
However I don't think this is the problem since the
problem is not persistent.

The Extreme5 from FMA is very good. I experience the same excellent range. I researched the field and found that the Extreme5 was also the lightest and smallest double conversion around. Moreover, it's spec'd for operation at 3.5 volts. This means that I can use a single lithium (830) to power the entire plane. This saves even more weight--and gives over 5 hours of flight time on a charge.

I'm curious as to WHY you do this.......is it so you won't damage the antenna in the process of launching...?

Also, how much weight does one save by removing the case on the 555 receiver? (I have one on order)

Basically yes. I should have said that I'm discus launching. It just feels more comfortable to not have that long antenna when I'm spinning. With my JR TX and FMA RX, I probably never need to extend it.

I just happened to weigh one yesterday.
According to my scales, it is 0.7 ounces
with case and 0.5 without..

I like the 555s, but I also use FMA quantums.
You can get an 8 channel rx which weighs
0.5 oz as sold, dual conversion, full range.
This is handy for me as I use a Stylus without
the glider card, so I need 6 (or is it 7) for
the second aileron on a 4 servo HLG.
Never had any problems with these receivers.

The GWS receiver is RATED at 4.8v, but I know for a fact that it works all the way down to 2.8v, I've tested it at that voltage and it still works fine. I often use it for my indoor planes that run on 4 cells.

I'm using several in HLG's with a single 4.2v Lithium-Ion cell (one of the Qualcom 830mAh ones) with great results. When the servos get sluggish it's time to charge. You'll dislike the response time of the servos well before the receiver stops working properly.

My observations, make your own conclusions.

Apologies to GWS! I found that one of the cells
of the 4-cell 110mAH NiCd has gone bad and was
behaving in the strangest way. While charging, its
voltage would drop rapidly! Then in use, it would
cause the servos to glitch for a few minutes then
stabilize and work more or less fine. I removed
the bad cell and the 3-cell pack is working fine. I
would switch to a 4-cell 110mAH Nimh or a 4-cell
50mAH nicd if I could extricate the damn cells from
the double sided sticky tape without destroying
the fuselage! Next time I use velcro!

This month's S&E modeler has an ad for the new FMA receiver, which is 30% lighter than the Extreme-5. This will certianly be THE receiver for HLGs for the forseeable future.
