the design

hi

i played around with the idea of a larger version for a while with foam venier wings and a glass fiber fuselage but after my wing joiner failed a strength test i decided to think again, a complete rethink redesign is now under way

i first drew it up with cad and created a 3d model that could be sliced up to give the shape of the formers, wing ribs and spars

the design part II

hi

with the fuselage and wing sliced up in all the correct places i could start to plan the layout

this is as far as i've got so far

there will be 3/16 spruce spars with vertical 1/8 shear webs, these will support a 1/8 hard balsa spar that will run full span at 1/3 chord, the leading and trailing edges will be 1/4 and the ribs will be 3/32 medium

the wing will be skinned as far as the 1/3 chord spar with 1/16 sheet

the fuselage formers will be 2 cross grain laminations of 3/32 balsa and there will be 4 3/16" spruce longerons and 4 1/8" soft balsa longerons

i'm not sure if the fuselage will be completely skinned in balsa yet, i will need to weigh it as i go along, this is my first EDF and my first balsa design so it may end up a bit heavy

see pic below of my progress, the fuselage formers need to have holes in them of course but thats as far as i've got

I've seen one of these in a magazine (EFI I think). It was yellow.

I do not want to disappoint you, but this design is around for ages, and there is even a commecial plan around for Mini Fan:

So at least I can tell you, that it flies excellent.

edf ducting question

hi

i know i have been disqualified from the competition but i still intend to build the boulton paul 111a, see the design and future build here

anyway i have a question

the scale inlet size of the 111a is going to be a lot bigger than the fan sweep area, nearly 160 percent

i've read that anything over 110 percent is too big, i'm going to have to make a light weight ducting to go up and over the wing spars so should i just slowly reduce the duct size as it travels up and over the wing or should i reduce it down to 110 percent as soon as posible and then keep the ducting an equal area as it travels backwards

thanks

kev

ps this is my first duct fan model so please be gentle with me

Any airflow not taken into the fan is spilled out of it, the associated drag is much much less than the effects of a propellor would have and the added area in the intake is not that bad of an idea. I normally try and make my intake area for smaller fans arround 120% or a little more and have had no ill effects on the speed of the aircraft, please note the Nano Bandits thread as that airframe has intake area over 125% and flies fine. The KC F-18(HET) has an intake arround 120% and it performs well enough.

Eric B.

PS: let the duct taper to the inlet evenly, no need adding extra drag in the intake with changing tapers.
