A Pretty Darned Good So. CA Slope Wind Tool
First, CLICK HERE for a primer on how to read wind barbs (scroll down the page to WIND).
Once you figure that out, CLICK HERE to go to the NOAA's MESONET map for Southern California. You can hover your cursor over any of the little + doodads on the map (the cursor won't change shape) and station ID/location info will appear in the status bar at the bottom of the screen (at least in Internet Explorer). You can click on any of the little + doodads on the map for more detailed information from the station and an hourly history covering the last 24 hours. Enjoy Pete |

Another Wind Tool for So CA
CLICK HERE to go to the So. CA NOAA/CDIP Bouy Data Java page.
The first thing I do is click the Show Text box to un-check it. The red arrows indicates wind direction & speed. The green arrows indicate surf direction & speed. Hover your cursor over any of the red dots or green squares for information. Click any of the red dots or green squares for more detailed information. A note on off-shore wind direction: Wind tends to curl inland as it blows along the coast so if the wind appears to be paralleling the coast off-shore, there's probably on-shore winds happening at the coastline. I don't typically use this tool to decide where or when TO go sloping but it's a pretty good indicator of when NOT TO. If there's little to no wind off-shore or the red arrows are pointing away from land, there's a pretty good chance that a drive to your favorite coastal slope site will be a waste of fuel unless, of course, the object of that drive is a frozen banana or corn dog or something. Enjoy more. Pete |

There's a real good chance that I found it via a Google search instead of via a menu tree in a NOAA website. That's how I found the link to the wind barb information: I Googled "wind symbol" and the link was about the 3rd one from the top. I've lost count of the neat things I've found on the Internet that no amount of searching has found again. I hope that's because I'm not paying attention when I surf 'cause if it's not, then my memory is in a foot race with my sex drive to see which can abandon me the fastest. Pete |
