Sailing on Lake Champlain


While visiting the folks, (Dad's also an RC APer) We undertook one of our most challenging AP targets. Dad's C&C 34 while underway, on Malletts Bay on Lake Champlain, with a sea launch and a sea recovery. The launch and mission went well. The Wingo landed in the water on recovery however. Minimal damage, wet camera, radio, and sevos. Of course Big Brother made the recovery.

Fantastic! I had a customer ask me about taking picts of his 39 footer while under sail.

In his location, I would be able to do it while I was still on land, but still would have to get out over the water. I'd have to charge extra for that one because of the possibility of your last shot. :-) Those are just priceless, thanks for sharing.

Wonderful pictures guys.
How will you cope with salt water corrosion?
If sea water has got into your radio and camera it will eating away at components as we speak.

In Thrust We Trust
Gray- Lake Champlain is fresh water, though its 300-400 feet deep.
For saltwater, we use Corrosion-X.

Nice to see Mallets, sail there alot when I'm up to see the Green Mountains. Any sign of "Champie"? Great pics.

Fantastic pics!

I have always wanted to get some shots of my Hobie Cat, but sailing and flying a SlowStick tend to be mutually exclusive activities wind-wise.

The ultimate challange would be to get a shot of the cat flying a hull - anyone have a guess on the minimum wind speed to do that consistently - 15 mph maybe?

Having flown while riding in the back of a moving pickup truck, I definitely understand the difficulties of the air, pilot, and plane all moving in different directions.

Good shots, and I hope everything works okay when it dries out. Composition and exposure are very nice on the third one. Hard to take shots of a white subject in bright sun against a dark background without some exposure compensation dialed in.

I'm Bwolv's dad and owner of the C&C35. Bob is on his way back to Alaska as this is written. I'm sorry to say that the camera and electronics in the Wingo are toast. But he salavaged the card--thus the photos. Trying to take pictures of the Shelbunre Shipyard earlier this summer, using a Challenger with Pentam, I splashed and lost the camera as well. Suffice to say that the Pentam is slightly sensitive to submersion. On the other hand, the Challenger flies to this day.

Yah, I'd say 15 minimum. Winds for our shoot were about 8 - 9 knots. 15 or more will make your "recovery" even more exciting!!!
