"BRAVE CHICKEN" - or call it wot you like!

Well! I've reached the age and/or stage where I turn up to fly - and hardly ever do

My scale models, and their vulnerability (?) are making me turn "chicken"

So I'm breaking away for a bit to conjure up a little 400 thing that shouldn't scare me. As I am not sure exactly what it's going to turn into, some of you might like to build it along with me and innovate as you please.

I had shoulder, mid and low wing in mind. I think I'll go for low though - can put little legs on it!

Wing menu is....

3/32 sheet front sub-spar capped after structure completed with 1/8 LE.

1/8 sq main spars.

1/8 sheet rear sub spar. Ailerons will be of 1/8 sheet. Stock 1" x 1/4 TE will be used acroos the centre section and at the tips.

Structure begins by attaching 1/8 sq bottom spar to 1/32 sheet LE sheeting,
which should be cut approx 1-5/8 wide. This assembly is then pinned down, packed up, followed by the pinning down of the 1/8 sub TE (packed up with 1/8 scrap). Use a rib to line this up as you pin down.

The attached pics show the rib dimensions in millimetres.

The ribs on the outer panels are 60 mm apart. The centre section is intended to be fully sheeted wher it joins the fuselage....somewhere

From tip rib to tip rib is 30". So you can play with these pics or go pencil and ruler!

This is what happens when you can't sleep, and get up before dawn - and eat kippers

I'll be back when I've don a bit more....

Wing section

Vertical grain 1/32 sheet spar webs should complete the "D" box.

Ade - report later...

What to do Today?

Am I in the right forum for this one

Maybe I should convert it into a control liner and get into even more of a tangle

Well here's a three - view anyway.

Left side has smoothed out tip corners... trickier, now that I've practically built the wing.

I'm going to start on the fuselage today, mainly from 1/16 sheet with 3/32 formers. The sides should blend into the fin at the rear. The 400 (or maybe a 480) will be clamped into a rolled 1/32 tube. That will determine the width.

I think I'll make this a one-piece model with a top hatch.

Bored, Adrian?

Adrian, if you're turly bored, you can come and work on my Aircraft Carrier for me. I think the idea of this vehicle came from your part of the Earth, didn't it? Well, I need windscreen scrapers for mine, and the local car guys are laughing at me. Of course, they're not laughing as hard as I am when I pass by the gasoline stations.

Nice. I like the three view, I have so many projects going, or I would build along. Maybe over the winter?? I still have the plans and wood set aside for the Daddy "O", so many planes so little time.

Have a Jenny on your Mini!

Look what a mess you've made of your roof by smashing it with choppers

It's got a Cooper grille - is it a Cooper? Quite valuable if so!

Anyway, thanks, you chappies

My digi batteries died so I have got quite a bit further than these pics.

The motor tube is from 1/32 sheet, edge joined and rolled around the 400 can. Once it's dry, it's easy to cut out the cooling holes. Then draw round it and cut out 3/32 sheet which will become the nose formers which carry it. A small piece of hardwood is to be bound and glued under it - drilled to accept a screw to lock the motor in position.

Most of my designs incorporate crutch and former structure. In this case I simply glued the 1/4 x 1/8 on to the sides, measured up the formers to give me the width for my 1500 3S lipo, and stuck 'em on!

I'll be back...

BTW How do I create a .pdf from a .dxf CAD drawing? Want to post A4 plans eventually.

Very nice Adrian.

It migh be your Brave Chicken and plane to take risks with but it still nicer and has more work in it than my best plane. I'd be too chicken to fly it except on perfect days, and then very conservatively.

Been Trying!

Thanks Daniel!

I promise not to crash it till it's flown a few yards!

I've been playing with .wmf here. The drawing bits then become A4 standard .doc and are simply opened and printed from Microsoft Word.

So here's that rib which should measure what it says. If this does not work, then I'll post .dxf in zips once I've drawn them up.

Camera batteries charged!

Here there are a couple of simple formers designed "on-the-job" to be drawn later.

3/32 doublers are balsa cemented to the wing mount and nose areas.

Drew round the mount tube and roughed out an assembly. Trial and error fitting with 1 degree (about) side thrust. Then tack cyano in place, reinforce with PVA.

Next up the tail bits and controls.

I've opted now to make a removable wing instead of a top hatch.

Going to the Pub now
